Windows 7 doesn't like my Linsys Router

your router not being compatible is nonsense I have two WRT54GS V1 routers that work fine with 7

your first mistake was using the Linksys setup CD I don't know why they even include that every client that has called me over the years that has bought a Linksys router has done the same thing ran the CD and it never works there is no need for it uninstall it and reset your router with the reset button in the rear hold it in for 20+ seconds this will put the router back to factory defaults then download DD-WRT firmware from here Router Database | www.dd-wrt.com then read the installation WiKi Installation - DD-WRT Wiki the Linksys WRT54G is one of the all time best selling routers and the earlier versions were the best

once you have done the above try it out without encryption first and see how it goes if all is good I would try WEP encryption the higher levels of encryption seem to cause connection issues in my experience WEP may not be as secure but is more stable

I contacted Linksys to learn my router was out of warantee, ie., no support w/o paying. The tech intended to remotely configure my router at a cost. I wasn't sure I wanted to spend money for a "fix" or put the money toward a new router. He did tell me that the router should have no problems with W7 64 bit and that we would not be using the Install CD , same info many of you gave me. For kicks, I pushed "reset" button on router, powered everything down, powered up and connected modem, router, pc in sequence. For reasons I'll NEVER understand, everything is working now! I can see all PC's on my home network @ each. For the guy who mention Home Group vs Workgroup. Yes, I was aware of that. Again, thanks to all of you. Have a great day!

I think what is happening here is a lot of people who are moving from XP machines right to Windows 7 and having problems are finding out that their ISP and or ISP hardware does not support the IPv6 so unchecking that would be the first logical step

Next don't forget to restart ALL DEVICES when changing settings people always forget this very crucial step power down everything unplug modem and router power plug modem in first then router then start up computer


Also if you are connecting via wireless turn off encryption just as a test and see if you are able to connect I have seen WPA/WPA2 cause issues

Also try turning off the internal firewall in the router uninstall any security software with a firewall along with turning off the Windows 7 firewall as a test and see what happens you may just need to change a setting in your firewall setup

Also try starting Windows in safemode with networking and see if problem still exists

connection issues can usually be traced by trying the above outlined tests

Awesome glad you got it going I knew it was no big deal and that your router would be fine to many people are to eager to say it won't work buy new hardware before truly trying to solve the problem

I tried the reset button many times but I always tried to use the Install CD in an attempt to do a "clean" install. Funny thing, even after I hit the reset button this last time, my PC recognized the old network name, security key, etc. Like I say, I'll never understand why?!?!

like I said I have seen that so many times i have been doing this for a long time and every person i have seen use that CD ends up with trouble why Linksys puts that in with the router I do not understand it is not needed I tell people that if they buy one first thing to do is throw that away before you do anything lol...
