Networking (to file share) between Windows 7 and Windows XP

    Hello,

I have been struggling to figure out a way to network my Windows XP Professional (wired desktop) with my Windows 7 (wireless laptop).

I have already gone back through the 16 pages of this forum, and tried the suggestions for Is there a way to file share with XP?, Netorking between 7 and xp;Cant get it right, Win7 Wireless PC Doesnt See Wired XP on Network, cant see xp machine under win7, and even XP to 7 Printer sharing and can see printer from xp but not 7, but to no avail. Or at least, I am not doing it right.

I've been trying to work with a 'home' network on W7, and with firewalls down on both PCs. I do not have a homegroup setup on my W7 box. Both OSs are fully patched. I shared my "Desktop folder" with everyone. When I open up the group "Workgroup" on my XP machine, I can see my W7 computer and my XP computer, but I cannot access it. I get this message instead:

    XP machine said:
" [PC name] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.
I cannot see my XP on my W7. Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder was already on my XP machine (tried to DL it from the link and install, but my PC told me I already had a more recent version of it), I've set up advanced sharing and disabled password sharing on W7, I've enabled "Microsoft network client: Send unencrypted password to third-party SMB servers", and enabled all sorts of virtual access to my Windows 7 and XP. Nothing has worked.

    Can someone help me out?

I am not ashamed to admit that if I have to be walked through it from the beginning, I'll take it. I just want to be able to pull files from my Desktop to my Laptop, and vice versa.

    Thanks,

    AquiloNow

Have not had a problem with this other than in build 7057, But you don't need to see the shares to access them. You can type the share names into explorer or map the drive, of course that would only help accessing the xp machine from 7. The easiest way would be to use RDP with the drives you want to access in your remote session, that way you can swap files back and forth without having to worry about permissions.

Under windows homegroup connections, choose Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers, also make sure network discovery is turned on

YupYup - I want to be able to link the two computers together, so I can access the hard drive of my (expansive HDD) XP desktop on my (rather restricted space) W7 laptop, and be able to send stuff from my W7 machine to my XP to store, etc. I just can't get the two computers to access each other though. Digger - I have already done that, but to no avail.

Do you have all selected under advanced share public. I see all of my network just fine.

and the XP (shares) have/are user accounts WITH passwords?.....

also, in folder options, navi pane, ticked "show all folders" ?

same workgroup name? ( i think you said so, just making sure)

tried to remap/re-share the shared drives/folders on XP?

All the basics, double-check file/printer sharing and so on?

When I open up the group "Workgroup" on my XP machine, I can see my W7 computer and my XP computer, but I cannot access it.
you mean both ways? vice versa? or are you using another machine besides the lappy and desktop ?

Ok so on the windows 7 machine can you see the XP machine in the network map?, and have you tried mapping a drive or just typing the share name into explorer. What about remote desktop from windows 7 to XP does that fail as well?.

My apologies for taking so long to reply...had class today. x.x

Myzr7 - I have all of those options already selected on my W7 computer (except I selected "Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open, change, and create files").

Digger - My XP user account has a different user name and password than my W7 account. In my W7, it's ticked to show all folders. It's the same workgroup, I think I set that up right. I tried to re-share the drive in XP, but it didn't help. I can't share files/printers. On my XP machine, I do Network Places > Entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network (wait a few moments) > Workgroup. Now though, it won't show up anything inside, but gives me an error message of "Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is currently not available." Both computers are currently online. I am not using another machine besides my laptop and my desktop.

Yupyup - I cannot see the Windows XP machine on the network map. It is like it doesn't exist. I can't get Remote desktop to work in W7, but that might be my own experience as much as it not working (never really done that before).

When I map my W7, it only shows that computer (Twilight), and not my Windows XP (Blackrose).

If there's anything I need to take pictures of for anyone, I'll be more than happy to do so.

    I just want to get this to work ><;

Note as well - I set up my Remote Access using Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) - Network[2]=Networking%20Internet , but to no avail when it came to Step 8. I simply couldn't find that Registry key in Windows 7, for it does not exist for me.

Steps 7 and 8 wouldn't apply if you are only connecting to one computer on a lan. All you really have to do is make sure your allowing remote desktop connections on the XP machine.
