Looking for simple instructions for home network.

    Let us try some simple troubleshooting steps
    1. can you ping to and from either machines?
    2. Have you tried disabling both security suites, then pinging either machines, or trying to connect?
    3. If the answer is yes that had successful replies, especially for option 2, then you know for sure that its the security suite settings that you have to tweak.

    Here is a Cut & Paste from Window 7 to ping for Windows XP. This is where I believe I am having conflicts, I have also disabled ALL Firewall settings.

    C:\Users\User 7>ping 192.168.1.101

    Pinging 192.168.1.101 with 32 bytes of data:
    Request timed out.
    Reply from 192.168.1.100: Destination host unreachable.
    Reply from 192.168.1.100: Destination host unreachable.
    Request timed out.

    Ping statistics for 192.168.1.101:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 2, Lost = 2 (50% loss),

    C:\Users\User 7>

    Here is a Cut & Paste from window XP to Windows 7, with at first Norton 360, then without Anti-virus.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ping 192.168.1.100

    Pinging 192.168.1.100 with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from 192.168.1.100: bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=128
    Reply from 192.168.1.100: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 192.168.1.100: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=128
    Reply from 192.168.1.100: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128

    Ping statistics for 192.168.1.100
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

    With Norton 360 Firewall off

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ping 192.168.1.100

    Reply from 192.168.1.100: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128

    I have to metion that I noticed when on Windows XP Command Prompt that the Directory C:\Documents and Settings\Owner has a funny location should I change this location?

    I get nothing, no response.

    So W7 = 192.168.1.100, XP = 192.168.1.101?

    From XP to W7 it's good.
    From W7 to XP, no good.

    How did you setup IP for XP?

    It is all set to automatic with DHCP.

    I just wanted to see if they are both on the same vlan.

    Type ipconfig /all in command prompt of each machine, and post the results.
