Here is the problem with system restore.... what if it restores to a point to before he wants?? Then it takes away from other things and creates more problems. You can never tell when his computer created that restore point or if a restore point was made after the problem was occured and still won't fix it.

Nothing wrong with troubleshooting things.... you got to break things before you fix them... spend money to make money... you know all those over used phases....

If his setup is fine which by the way if I call my cable company and they treat me like an idiot. I will go down there and bash their head against the table for reading off a computer screen.

Probaby something that was installed with windows update...that usually stays on all the time and updates on its own.. I would definitly check that first. Sometimes check his cable modem to see if it had been updated or any other hardware had been recently updated first...

If he has a firewall, that is always doing daily updates and pushes... may have changed some settings...

Do you have dynamic ips or static ips on your network? I would definitly change over to static that way we can ping the computers to make sure those work and then we can finally work on the router... we have to do process of elimination.

    Thanks, solved.

Thanks for all the replies, and thanks chev65 for the tip I should've tried first. Restarting the router and switch solved the problem!

Just for the record for future readers, yes I tried restore up to two days before. There isn't much of change going with my machine, I was just using it for reading and browsing. So two days back was the last update, and that didn't solve the problem.

As to whether it's good to jump to restores, i think it depends on how annoying this no internet is and how much you can tolerate it :).

I have a router and switch as I have several networked devices running, and my old router was slow so I got switch for internal fast communication.

Thanks again guys... You saved me!

Well that's good experience. I must say restarting the router surprised me, cos usually if you haven't made any changes to the hardware, it usually doesn't produce errors. If restarting the router did work, it must have also been a modem/ISP connection error. I get alot of internet access errors, and most of the time it's the ISP rebooting their servers or something to that effect.

    Solved it is! :)

Yeah surprised me too. What I didn't explain was that I was able to connect through my MacBook, so it wasn't ISP, or even if, MacBook was able to recover.

I'm glad the reset worked for you. When in doubt reseting the router is usually the first thing I do which is why it was one of the first things I mentioned. Lets not lose track of where the advice to reset the router came from. I give credit where credit is due and in this case I think I made the correct call.

The only reason I tried fixing the adaptor in my first post is because the Op seemed to think that is where the problem was.

Using system restore would not be an option for me, due to past experiences I just don't trust it.

I usually work from the outside in > router> drivers> system, that is just what works around here.
