    Wireless slow (500kb/s)

    Hello,
My wireless is slow on my new sony vaio I purchased about a month ago. The adapter for the wireless is a 5100 AGN and my router is a WPN824 V3. It says that I have an excellent internet connection, but in actuality, its slow writing emails on gmail (the letters appear about 10 seconds after they are typed, sometimes not even appearing) and pages sometimes do not load and have the blue circle going round and round with nothing being displayed (several refreshes later the page loads). I made sure to calibrate everything on the router with the laptop (for example, the b/g connection on advanced settings). Any other tips?
Also I went on a speed test sight and compared the download rate of the laptop vs. the hard wire. The hard wire was about 6 times faster than the wireless on the laptop.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Run Anti-Virus / Anti-Spyware on the computer first. See what comes up with the computer.

Also, can you run "msconfig" and post a picture of what is running on your computer to see if we can shut down any unnecessary programs?

Also, Lets check to see if it really is your wireless. Can you hardwire your laptop into your router and see if it is the card itself.

I am sure the wireless is fine. It may be the computer itself. For being the first response thread, this is just process of elimination.

Also, could you please give us your make and model of your computer and if there has been any upgrades to your laptop, inform us as well.

Update the router's firmware and the wireless drivers too - use the guide in my sig if necessary.

I have McAfee Installed on this computer and just ran a full scan. Nothing came up. Also, I don't think it has anything to do with running too many programs because I have 457 GB of free memory left and 6 GB of RAM.
System Type: 64 Bit Operating System
The computer has a product number: VGN-FW560F
I have installed some updates that the computer suggested to install. Other than that, there are not updates needed to be installed.

Drivers and firmware may not come through - they need to manually installed.

McAfee does have the Anti-Spyware right? I just want to make sure.

I would defintily go here and update all the drivers ... the most up to date drivers reguardless if it needs it or not. Sometimes, windows updates wll want to install its own windows drivers.

Especially, try to install the 40 meg updated wireless driver

are you keeping the laptop in the house or are you expecting to take it ouside the house and on alot of trips. We can put it on a static IP as well to make it work well.

Another thing you can do is unplug your modem for at least three minuets. Then unplug your router for 3 minuets. Plug your modem in, let it boot up all the way, and then boot your router up all the way. make sure you do that after you download all the drivers on your laptop first.

If you dont mind me asking... It may be your security...
What type of security are you using WEP? WAP?
This has a Wireless N adapter built in... If your router supports it. We can activate the N on it.

What kind of router do you have so tat we can get down to businss about this issue

WPN824 V3That is the name of my router and the security for my stay-at-home laptop is WPA-Personal (I tried playing around with this setting before hand and if its anything different from this, than the computer says that the settings do not match on the router and the computer).
How do you do this static IP?
    Thanks so much so far.

Also I checked for any driver updates and there were none... I'm checking the sony website right now. And yes, McAfee does have virus scan.

Just a thought, do you think that it might have something to do with how my operating system is 64-bit while the router's might not?
