    I'm not sure I agree with this. SMB uses TCP/IP which is a routed protocol. Many mapped drive issues over VPN tend to come from DNS or WINS problems. SMB requires a name server.

    I can find no information on the Microsoft Technet site about SMB not being routable from a client. Something else is wrong here.

    veldthui: Is it possible we can get a look at the ipconfig /all results when connected to the VPN at your sister's house? I'd like to see the DNS and Gateway entries while the tunnel is active.

    I at first doesn't understand what was going on in my own network... I have a persistent VPN connection to one of my client on another city. At first I use Softperfect Network Scanner to enumerate any number of clients and what service they offer in one "console". When I run that scanner on a LAN (I logged on locally, one network with them), it can enumerate and tell me which have what share to offer. When I do that at home over VPN, the shares are gone. I tried the same thing to another client of mine, this one is 2 VPN hops away (me VPN to a network, this network VPN to my client), same thing. The only host(s) that will list it's shares are Linux boxes that's serving SMB shares, Linux's SMB server implementation supports listening to requests other than it's own subnet (you can set it to do otherwise).

    If you're familiar with Apache/IIS, in both of those programs you can define the
    [listen_address : port], I think SMB server in Windows clients are listening to [LAN_IP_Address:139] instead of [0.0.0.0:139]. The TCP/IP protocol does support routing, the problem here is that the server that is listening the requests are deaf to requests that are not coming from it's subnet.

    I think you have the resources to try things out, RedBirdDad. If you can access a Windows Client's SMB share over a routed network, please teach me how, I've been bugged with this issue since almost 3 years ago and haven't found any solution/clue...

    I'm not sure what I'm seeing here. I see a wireless connection with IP information but everything else shows disconnected. I don't see a VPN tunnel. What kind of VPN connection is this? What client are you using? Is it PPTP? IPSec? SSL?

    There are 2 active interfaces, one is the "Wireless LAN adapter JV Wireless" (192.168.1.65), the other one is "PPP adapter To Vigor" (192.168.0.100). Looking at this, the one that initiates the VPN connection is the Laptop, I don't see how a VPN connection initiated by the router would wind up shown in the ipconfig /all on the laptop...

    veldthui, can you make a screenshot of the page you were referring, the one you said you'd click on to initiate VPN connection over on your router, please?

    Correct. There are 2 active connections. The first is the Wireless Adaptor which is the Wireless connection to my sisters router. It has DHCP running and has allocated an IP address of 192.169.1.65. The bluetooth connection is not operatoing. The second is the To Vigor adaptor which is the PPTP VPN connection and has an IP address if 192.168.0.100 (which has been given by the DHCP server on my home router). The home network is 192.168.0.0/254 range. The connection is open as I can ping every single PC and the router on the home network. Just cant see the drives. Also can't connect to the Apache server that is on one of the machines through the VPN connection but can through the internet connection.

    Cant do any screen shots at present as am at work. The VPN Client is called SmartVPN by Draytek but I have also tried the Windows 7 internal VPN connector as well and same story.

    veldthui,

    I have done everything in my power to make Windows file share to be available over routed network (in this case, VPN connection) in my own network, and for the love of god... after 3 years, I still don't know how to do that on a Windows Client. Which made me draw a conclusion, Windows Client SMB server implementation is being "crippled" by Microsoft to push Windows Server product, product differentiation for file serving products I suppose.

    Have you tried disabling the Windows Firewall on your "server" at home, see if it connects?

    HOLY CRAP, I solved it !!!

    The culprit is as usual ==> WINDOWS FIREWALL !!!

    Here's how:

    1. Open Windows Firewall, go to it's advanced settings.
    2. Click the Inbound Rules.
    3. Create a new inbound rule
    4. Use a predefined rule, select "File and Printer Sharing".
    5. Check the "File and printer sharing (SMB-in)", profile Private, Public
    6. Allow the connection
    7. Right click the newly created rule, click "Properties"
    8. Go to "Scope" tab, "Remote IP address" change to "Any IP address"
    9. Hit OK

    That should do it.

    Is that on the remote machines to do those changes? I will have to do it to each PC. I use Windows Firewall on two machines and AVG on the 3rd. Will check it out when I get a chance which may be a couple of days now due to work.
