    Sharing and Discovery

To access them, you must click the Change Advanced Sharing options Windows 7 maintains three separate network profiles (Home or Work, Public, and Domain), and maintains separate sharing settings for each of the profiles.
make sure network discovery is on for all profiles
I go into advanced sharing settings....and I am on "public - current" and I see "home or work" and network discovery is on in both.

    Current is "public"

Actually it could easily be a driver issue so I disagree with your analogy, he can connect locally but he can't get online so it could easily be a driver problem. In fact I helped fix Nate's last problem which was a router problem at home.

This may sound stupid, but I can't figure out HOW to change it to "work" permanently. As soon as I unplug the ethernet and plug it back in....it's back to "public"

Apologies if this idea has been said, but, You said there are 9 machines connected... Could it be an IP Conflict? My Brothers internet on his laptop had wasn't working and it was an IP Conflict, if it is, you can change the IP your computer is listed as on the router from settings on the computer.

If you think it could be that I will see if i can give steps to help you :)

I welcome your help Chev. I have connected 3 other laptops that were the same model this week.

It may have become corrupt. I could try that......I just think it may be something simpler. I hope....

I use to use Public network back when I had xp machines on the LAN. Never had a problem getting online though. This better not be that stupid MAC address problem again. That has been the latest problem with getting online, cloned MAC addresses.

A driver reinstall is fairly simple to check out, just in case it was corrupted somehow.
