I want to share a particular folder with someone on a different computer on my office network, but not with everyone on everycomputer on the office network. When I pull up "share with," I can only give permissions to users on my own computer, not to users on other computers. How do I share with a particular user on a different computer?
There are definately other easier ways to share with individual users. This video shows you how.
Share files with someone
When I click on "Share with," the only users listed are users on my computer. I want to make the folder available to a limited number of people on the network, i.e., users on other computers on the network. The entire office network is connected to the Internet, so it is technically a public network. Right now, I am sharing some folders on my computer with everyone on the network by putting the folders in the "public" user folder. Still, I can't seem to share any folder with just a few users on one of the other computers. Suggestions?
Okay...
Make a User in your User Groups...
Dummy user.. Just make it a limited User. (no need for admin)
Supply a password if you only want a few people to access it.
becuase if people figure out the user name they can access it.
then once you create the user it will show up in the box... right click on the folder, share with specific user, add that user and then give the user and passwords to the people to only want access to
I very much appreciate your help, but I don't think we are on the same page yet. Let's call my computer "Computer A." I have the bookkeeping on Computer A. If I set up a dummy user on Computer A, the dummy user can access the bookkeeping while sitting at Computer A, and no other user on Computer A can access the bookkeeping unless I give them permission. This much I understand. But I want the dummy user to be able to access the bookkeeping while sitting a Computer B. So far, I can enable the dummy user to access the bookkeeping while sitting at Computer B, but only if everyone on the netwook can access bookkeeping. Thus, users on Computer C, D, E can also access the bookkeeping. I want to limit access to the bookkeeping to me on Computer A and the dummy user on Computer B, while at the same time allowing everyone on the network to access other files on Computer A. Suggestions?
You are going to have to be more specific. Bookkeeping is ambiguous in this post. Do you mean bookkeeping as in the network of comuters, like A and B, or bookkeeping as in certain folder/files on computer A.
The suggestion earlier will work if bookkeeping refers to certain files on Computer A. You can share all your files with other users. But explicitly mark only the files you want to share with User B with the permissions of the dummy account.
If bookkeeping is refering to a network, then you'll actually need to make the same dummy user account on both A and B.
Yeah now i know what you want... i know that kind of stuff is done in Windows Server... but with a typical Workgroup software like Windows XP HP umm Windows 7/Vista Home User.. little more difficult.
By "bookkeeping," I meant a folder called "bookkeeping." We can call it the Folder 2010 instead of bookkeeping. Am I out of luck?
