Preventing VPN from tunneling internet

Hello all,

I can successfully create a VPN connection to my work network using the Windows 7 client and can access the network locations at work. However, when I am connected to the VPN, my internet seems to be tunneled through it. This is evident due to a drop in download speed and Firefox starts to use OpenDNS for its address bar searches (which is used on my work network). Disconnecting from the VPN returns by internet speed back to normal and my Firefox address bar searches revert back to google.

Some searching on the internet has shown that if I can uncheck the "Use default gateway on remote network" box for the TCP/IPv6 and TCP/IPv4 items in the VPN connection properties, this should prevent this from happening. Although I have done this for both items, I am still getting reduced internet speed (albeit not as badly as before) and OpenDNS pops up again.

Any ideas on how to solve this? I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Thanks

Sounds like you're running into a split tunneling problem.

What kind of VPN is it? When you set it up did you leave the type as "Automatic"?

Hi Red,

The VPN type is indeed set to Automatic.

I've seen references to not using "Automatic" when trying to use Split Tunneling. Just for grins you might try setting the type manually.

I'll keep looking and see if I can find anything. Turn off the remote gateway should be enough to do do it.

Another option is to create a new connection with the new settings. Maybe something is not getting changed properly when you edit the existing connection. Just a thought.

Download's consume bandwidth, preventing internet browsing.
When ever I start a download it eats up my internet bandwidth, making browsing a normal web page take forever to load. When I'm not downloading a file i get about 12Mbps down, and 1Mbps up. When i start a download the numbers drop close to 0. The program performing the download seems negligible;...
