Windows 7: Internet Loss/no connect

Internet Loss/no connect

Here's an interesting trouble, but certainly not a fun one.

I have a fairly new PC, (1yr) Core 2, and everything with it. Had XP installed on it, EVERYTHING worked 1000. No issues whatsoever. Switched over to FIOS with a 2nd generation Actiontec Router, still no problems at all.

Did a clean install of Windows 7. Bingo. Internet connectivity problems.

I have tried 4 different NICs, and recently purchased a brand new D Link Windows 7 approved card. They all perform the same. Lost connections, and failure to link up.

The drivers in the NIC are the most recent (for Win7). I have tried the range of everything that I can think of...the way to get the PC working is as follows: Boot up to Win 7 and the traingle of death comes up. Turn on another PC (with XP) that's connected to the same router and open up the router to check settings. Just look at the settings, change a setting, then change it back, and presto....the Win 7 machine gets connected.

This method will get the Windows 7 machine up and running fine until a re-boot on the 7 machine. then it's back to the traingle of death.

Ok, so the drivers are up-to-date, plugging and re-plugging the ethernet cable does nothing, un-checking IP6 does nothing, the problem is not with the NIC card, since I have tried these 4 cards with updated drivers and it's the same thing.

The Asus board has a built in NIC, ( N Videa) I can either enable that or disable, no difference.

When I do an IPCONFIG and the machine is up, it comes back 100%.

When I check IPCONFIG (and the machine is not connected) it shows a loss of connection between the PC and the router.

So, I'm thinkin' that somehow this is an issue with the Actiontec FIOS router and the software.

I'm getting real frustrated at this point...

Welcome!

Try updating the firmware for your router: http://actiontec.com/support_cms/doc...e_Versions.pdf

OK, so I turned on the Win 7 machine, no internet. Turned on the other XP machine to go into the Actiontec to check the firmware version (that's all!) then went back to the 7 machine and it's on the net. This is really weird to say the least.

"Just look at the settings, change a setting, then change it back, and presto....the Win 7 machine gets connected."... What setting are you changing then changing back...

By the way the more I read this it appears to be something with the xp box being on.

Would be interested to see what your XP ipconfig /all and your Windows 7 ipconfig /all say.

Do you have the same problem when you hardwire the Win7 system to the router?

So the PC has a built in NIC (is this working?) and you went to install another NIC, but the 2nd nic is not working?

What settings in the router did you change to make it work?

As far as the xp machine's config goes, I can eliminate that possibility by trying to do exactly the same thing from let's say my wireless laptop or a totally different xp machine....I'll try that and get back to you on that one...

Yes, the Win 7 machine is hardwired to the router.

The Win 7 machine has a built in Nvidea NIC. Since the problem began, I thought it could be non-compatible, so that's why I tried these other cards, winding up with the D-Link. The Onboard NVidea did previously work with XP......so bottom line the new card works but only after I open up the router..(no changes). Each time I open up the router I click on any setting just to look at it, do not change it, then check the Win 7 rig and it's then working...sounds confusing, and I am!

Here's another thing that I found out tonight.....

When the Win 7 machine boots up, there is no internet. And......I cannot go into the router by way of opening a browser, typing in the IP, etc....

But... I CAN go into the router from the XP machine using a browser, IP, etc....

Then of course, when the internet is up, I CAN get into the router from WIN 7 machine...

And, once the Win 7 machine is up it stays up as long as I do not power down.

It's as if there's a setting or firewall or something that blocks initial communication with the Actiontec.

clear as mud?

Looks like you have a magical touch with your magical router there. No comment on that....and there is no theory about it either lol.

Anyway it sounds like the router is having issues knowing that the new NIC(s) are trying to connect to or thru it.

Is there some kind of MAC cloning option in your router?

It depends on what the MAC option look like.

Does it look like it has boxes where you can enter MAC details?

Here is something abit on it, but my router is the awesome Linksys.

https://www.sevenforums.com/network-s...uter-port.html

I hear you ask where could i get the MAC address?

You could get it from doing ipconfig /all in the command line.

Btw, no guarantee if it'll work, but it will ensure your router has learnt of your devices.
