    Router not showing in network

For some reason my netgear router is not showing on the network page of 'my computer'.
it used to show up as 'Netgear Router' and if i clicked on it it would ask for my login and then display my configuration setting etc on a browser page. If I click on a link I have setup on my browser, it navigates there as normal.

Not a humungous issue, but although I have tried a system restore, it still does not show up as expected. Connectivity is fine, as per normal.

    Any ideas folks?

Did you use to have Vista? My Vista network had the same icon in Network, but Win7 doesnt show it. I honestly believe it is a security feature, to hide your router from other network users. As long as you type in the IP of your Default Gateway in your browser it should take you to your routers logon/config page.

Besides simply typing in your default gateway into your browsers URL, you can still access your router control page by using the Network and Sharing center then select the "Show full map" option, at which point you can click on your router icon and access the router page from there.

interesting input - over here the option is called "see full map"
didn't even know it existed. However, the router's ethernet part (where I'm currently connected) shows as "unknown" where as the WLAN module and it's connected devices are displayed correctly, ssid included.

(update: on my wired machine I see the the wired and wireless part of the netgear router at the same time. wired with a question mark, wireless with the correct ssid naming)

It has strangely reappeared as normal, so don't know whats going on.

I have an internittent issue with it though. At random times the icon in the r/h side of the ttaskbar has an exclamation mark and my connection drops. I click on the network icon and it shows all green bars on the wireless connection indicator. However I am connected to the router by ethernet cable. If i move the cable to another port on the router it connects immediately and all is ok again.

Both my laptops I use in the house wirelessly connect perfectly at all times.

Cant work out the issue there.

Hmmmmm so your ethernet is dropping your connect intermittantly (not normal) and then the wireless nic takes over automatically (which is normal).

Since you said you can switch to a different port on the router and it is fixed then I'm gonna point my finger at either a bad port on the router (it happens) or a bad cable.

Sounds to me like your machine is trying to use both connections "wired and wireless" at the same time. One or the other needs to be used as the network connection but not both at once. :)

    andygo:

To clarify for us... do you see both wired and wireless icons in notification area at the same time or, do you see wireless only after wired drops you?

It only ever shows the wireless connection icon. Actually when I hover the mouse it says 'home' 'Internet connection'.

I have swapped the cable fpr a new one, and it seems fine, but then its so intermittent it can do days without dropping anyway, so it might not be fixed after all. I'll keep you posted.

Right. Well it cant be the cable as the connection has just dropped out again. when i remove the cable the exclamation mark on the icon changes to a brown dot (sort of..) and the blue spinning circle you get when the pc is having a think appears. Clicking on the icon still shows fiull wireless connectivity.

In network settings I can't communicate with the router. Its only by swapping ports or resetting the router do I regain wired connectivity. Must be either a windows or a router setting issue.

    I'm stuck again!
