You should also make sure that 192.168.1.1 is actually the gateway for that router. It can be changed once in the settings. I would recommend doing a factory reset on the router before continuing as the friend could very well have had specific settings.

You can check to see what the gateway address is in your network settings.

Start-> Control Panel-> Network and Sharing Center-> Change Adapter Settings-> Right click on the Wireless adapter and select "Status"-> Click on Details... button-> IPv4 Default Gateway

That is the address you should be putting into your address bar.

There are some other things you need to ensure as well. For instance, you won't be able to just plug it in and go for the most part. You need to power cycle the devices.

Unplug the power to your modem, unplug the power to your router and turn off your computer.

Plug the power to the modem in and wait for it's initialization to complete (Generally a solid DSL light). Then plug the power to the router in, and give it a moment to initialize. Turn on the computer.

If you give us the model number of the router someone here can give you instructions on resetting to factory defaults so it's as if you just bought it. :)

Very true, although since he bought this from a friend I am assuming he/she had it unplugged long enough to reset to factory defaults.

In oder to determine if your routers IP is still 192.168.1.1, open your command prompt by clicking Start --> All Programs -->Accessories -->Command Prompt.

Once in the Command Prompt, type IPCONFIG/ALL

This will tell you the IP of your PC and the gateway. (The gateway is the router in your case)

If the gateway is something other than 192.168.1.1, you can reset it to defaults by holding the reset button on the rear of the router in with a paperclip for about 20 seconds. (Do this with router powered on).

OR... you can leave the routers IP where it is and use the gateway IP shown to you via command prompt to access it via your browser.

True, but all Linksys routers (OPs router) use by default 192.168.1.1.

True, but all Linksys routers (OPs router) use by default 192.168.1.1.

That's not entirely true. I've used plenty of Linksys routers which defaulted to 192.168.0.1 as well as 192.168.2.1

Everyone I've ever had or supported was 192.168.1.1... by default.

I am not saying you are wrong, but I've been a network consultant for over 10 years... and I have never had a linksys with an address other than that. Wired or wireless.

Perhaps someone changed the default IP on yours???

Are you sure it was a router and that it wasnt a WAP? What model #???
