hi LPt, why would you want to get rid of homegroup? i think you would be better leaving it where it is for the time being :)

Pebbly I was asking because a friend was interested in getting rid of it.. on her pc... shall I just suggest to my gf to leave it alone ?
thanks for your reply to my inquirey.

I've not set up my router to any group for myself. I'm not sure which one I should choose to begin with.. I had chosen the home group earlier.. then I forgot to secure my router so I re-set it to the default setting.. I've been to busy to get it set up again.. I didn't have a passowrd on it the first try.. I must slow down and get this done.. I've connected my desktop..and my new windows 7 laptop with this router..
it's working corectly.. as much as I can tell.. I see all green lights on the router.. I have had the laptop connected also since the re-set.. was done.
I'll take it to the local Mcdonalds to test as soon as I know which kind of group I should choose.. and get it all secured.
    Thank you again.

In my opinion homegroup is rather useless... but from your 2nd post I get the feeling the homegroup is not the issue. Are you speaking of "network profile" for home/public/work?

For a home network (which sounds like your situation) just use "home". Each profile can be "edited" so technically you can make all profiles the same... however not recommended.

Quite the opposite when all computers connected to th switch/router are Windows 7 computers.

In the spirit of debate, what would be a benefit of using homegroup instead of simple workgroup? Is there something you can 'only' do in homegroup that you can't do in a workgroup setting even in a native mode?
