Telnet port open, want it closed.

    Hi all

    Question.
I am trying to make sure any outside access to my network is eliminated.

I did a port scan of my network behind my router and it shows that port 80 is open, of course I need that for internet. But it is also showing port 23 Telnet is open.

I used Advanced Port Scanner v1.3.

I then used it to scan my specific WAN ip and it shows both the same ports open,
    23 and 80.

I have gone into Windows Services and made sure the Telnet service is disabled, but am worried with this open port, someone can gain access.

Is there something else I can do? Gonna try shutting off port 23 Telnet in Windows firewall. That's the only thing I can think of.

I am behind a Gigaset 567 Telus DSL router. I am running Windows 7 Pro on an ACER Aspire 6930 laptop.

You may also be able to block that port in your router.

Ok. Tried to do it on Windows firewall. I am in over my head doing this.

Got a good link to point me to? For firewall and/or router?

Been googling but keep finding XP instructions.

Also I recently just installed windows 7, replacing Vista so layout a little different.

    Cheers

    Ok.

I just tried GRC Sheilds Up for extra test.

It says that Telnet port 23 is closed.

Is there a reason Advanced ip Scanner is saying differently and can I trust that GRC ShieldsUp is correct?

If so, I will ignore Advanced IP Scanner and leave it alone.

I did however, fail on the TruStealth analysis. My system replied to WAN ping requests

I have been up and down and thru my Gigaset router but cannot find an option to disable wan ping replies, like there was on my old D-Link WBR 1310 router. I will keep hunting how to shut off ping replies, but any nudge in right direction would be awesome.
