I was using a homegroup, but I just left it. I think I'll let the internet go for a while, downloading and all, and tomorrow morning when I wake up (downloads still on), if my internet works, I'll know that solved it. I also capped my upload speed.

You need to cap the upload speed AND connection limit per torrent, limiting either one will still give you (some) problems, limiting both will almost always fix any problems.

Hi, I've got some issues with whenever I download torrents (legal downloads of course). Whenever I so much as open any torrent client, all of my other internet stops working. All of the internet in my entire house too, not just my computer. This only seems to happen in my Se7en installation, but not on my Ubuntu format.

I've tried uTorrent, Vuze, BitLord, BitComet, and BitTorrent.

    Any ideas why?
    1) if you aren't using uTorrent... switch over to it. If you are on BitTorrent, make sure you uninstall DNA. (DNA hides in the background and does file sharing all the time your machine is on, whether you want it to or not.)

    2) It seems likely your torrent client is simply saturating your network connection. They will do that unless you take steps to prevent it.

The fix is to self-regulate... in the options for your torrent client you will find a spot to limit the maximum upload and dowload rates. These should be set to about 2/3 of your maximum bandwidth from your ISP... You should also limit the maximum number of simultaneous downloads to 3 or 4. Uploads to about 2 or 3. This will allow reasonably quick torrent activiey but will also prevent it from saturating your network connection and blocking others from using their browsers (etc).

The one thing I learned about torrents, very early on, is that you should never operate these clients on defaults... they will happily shut down your entire network if you let them.

it is possible that the torrent is overloading your router as previously said, its worth nothing that the new utorrent (2.1 beta) supports something called utp which should back off the connection when its needed (say for web browsing)

actually this was intorduced in 2.0 but i found it never worked for me until 2.1

i'm using utorrent 2.1 and i'm finding that i get faster speeds when running my pc in safe mode, why would this be?

    this is my speedtest result

can u give me any indication as to whether my current utorrent settings of max upload = 70kB/s, Global download limit = 0kB/s, Max connx = 400, Max peers = 90 and upload slots per torrent = 5 should be ok? Otherwise can you recommend more optimal settings please?

Ok based on your speed test results try this...

    Set your uploads to 40kBps
    Set downloads to 500kBps
    Max Connections to 200
Max peers per torrent to 50
    Max active torrents to 10
    Max active downloads to 5
    Max upload slots to 4

Also in Advanced settings (the part they tell you not to touch)

BT Have to Seed should be FALSE and
BT Scrape stopped should be TRUE.

These won't affect throughput but it makes for a much more compliant behavior on LAN based connections.

This should give you pretty good throughput without saturating your network connection.

And FWIW... it's not your router that's being saturated. Most routers today can handle 10 times the speed of the average internet connection. It's the internet connection itself that is being saturated, which is why other computers in the house will lag and run extremely slow when accessing thie internet but still behave nicely when accessing shared files.

I think you already understand this, but just in case...Your speed test results do not indicate that each computer has 6mbps, they indicate that all computers are sharing 6mbps... so you need to take that into consideration when setting up uTorrent.
