Actually this problem has been around for a long time, blaming Utorrent used to be the first responce for this problem until further examination revealed it was really a driver problem. I can run Utorrent with zero adjustments and never get a crash, although adjusting the upload speed does make the downloads go a bit faster.

I would try a different eithernet driver as I'm quite certain that is the cause of the problem, this has been the case many times before starting about 9 months ago. :)

    yes, really...DEAD! :|

but settings aside, my original question (and i'm not the TS btw) is why are my downloads faster whilst running win7 in safe mode? is there some windows settings i can change whilst running in normal mode to get me the same speeds?

Are you running a virus scanner in normal mode?
If so it's probably not starting up in safe mode so there's no overhead on the connection.

If that's the case, the solution is obviuos... disable your full time virus tool and switch to an on-demand one like A-Squared. Or, you could just live with it.

Actually it probably is uTorrent in this case. His computer is not crashing... it's taking everyone's internet connection down when he starts uTorrent. I doubt very much that switching drivers is going to fix a WAN saturation poroblem.

Actually you are mistaken, this same problem has been around for a very long time, way before you were even a member here. I meant crashing the connection not the computer. In every case it was solved with a different eithernet driver, absolutely no doubt about it.

I remember before that everyone was blaming Utorrent back then also, in every single case the driver was the problem not Utorrent. I'm going by what fixed this problem in the past many times. I think I mentioned that in my first post. So I'll be sticking to my original and also correct first responce if you don't mind. :)

ROFL... And I was around long before I became a member here too. It is a serious and trifling error to think that anyone's life or expertise began the first time you encountered them. In fact I've been working professionaly in computers and electronics for nearly 40 years.

I meant crashing the connection not the computer. In every case it was solved with a different eithernet driver, absolutely no doubt about it.

Ok... but I still think it's uTorrent simply saturating the connection...

Now lets see, how would I know that... well, I just took the throttles off, let the connection run full speed and waited for the yelling to start from the kid's rooms... HEY, what's wrong with the network??? Then I put it back as I suggested earlier and the yelling stopped...

The OP didn't say his connection was crashing. If that was the case he would have problems with his browsers, email and other file downloads. The only thing stated as a problem was uTorrent... so there seems no reason to fix the computer when it's the fault of a single program.

Methinks that once again we are looking for complex solutions --oh there must be something wrong with the network-- when in fact it's just plain busied out to the max.

I'll be sticking to my original advice about this being a driver problem and nothing more. This fact has already played out many times. Or do you think that Utorrent is going to somehow make a special version just to fix this problem? Come on now, think about what your saying. Utorrent is not the problem I can assure you. People would be in here everyday with this problem if that was so.

No doubt that if you have enough torrents going you will bog down your connection for everyone on your network. That has always been the case with Utorrent or just torrents in general but that isn't the problem described by the OP.

    Quote from OP:

Hi, I've got some issues with whenever I download torrents (legal downloads of course). Whenever I so much as open any torrent client, all of my other internet stops working. All of the internet in my entire house too, not just my computer. This only seems to happen in my Windows 7 installation, but not on my Ubuntu format.

Now I would call that a network crash!

When you said this... The OP didn't say his connection was crashing. If that was the case he would have problems with his browsers, email and other file downloads. The only thing stated as a problem was uTorrent... so there seems no reason to fix the computer when it's the fault of a single program.

That is the same old argument as others used in the past, they were proven incorrect on every occasion. Been there done that, there is nothing wrong with Utorrent period!

It's a simple solution that has already been tried and proven to work many times already. Nobody believed it then either but they do now, well most of us anyway.

Nobody said anything about a special version... All I'm suggesting is that he go through the uTorrent SETTINGS and make a few changes to leave a bit of open bandwidth on his internet connection.

You do know what settings are... don't you?

Come on now, think about what your saying. Utorrent is not the problem I can assure you. People would be in here everyday with this problem if that was so.
Nope... they'd most likely be on the uTorrent forums yelling about it. If there was some driver problem with windows 7 such as in the description you quoted, I'd expect to see two things: 1) it would affect more than uTorrent and 2) people would be in here screaming their heads off about it... And that's not what's happening is it?

No doubt that if you have enough torrents going you will bog down your connection for everyone on your network. That has always been the case with Utorrent or just torrents in general but that isn't the problem described by the OP.
Actually it I think it is... If the problem was drivers I'd have expected to hear him complain about crashes when downloading with IE or FTP as well.

That is the same old argument as others used in the past, they were proven incorrect on every occasion. Been there done that, there is nothing wrong with Utorrent period!

It's a simple solution that has already been tried and proven to work many times already. Nobody believed it then either but they do now, well most of us anyway.
Hmmmm now let me think about this... A few simple settings changes or start messing with drivers and core system functionalities?

Common sense should dictate that you try the least invasive and/or simplest things first... there's no reason to leap straight to tampering with the guts of a system that otherwise works well enough to not be complained about.

But then... what do I know, I'm only a month old by your reconning.

Tossing in a few sarcastic insults won't make you any more correct,.. you should know better tater, really dude that ain't cool.

I guess you missed the actual fix for this the last thirty times it came up, but I didn't. The sad thing is that you are only delaying the amount of time it takes the Op to fix the problem. I won't get into the fact that I never quoted anyone with my first post just to avoid being arguementative, alot of good that did me...

And god forbid someone having a difference of opinion here on an internet forum?

By all means the Op should attempt to throttle the connection, that takes about five seconds to do and it's been standard procedure with Utorrent for a long time far as I know.

The real problem here is that downloading a single torrent should not be crashing his entire network. That is a driver problem which has come up many times before. The Op should try one of the older Vista drivers if he can't find any that are made for Win 7.
