password box does not let me access server

Help! I have a small business with a network of 7 pc's using Windows XP. Replaced an old laptop with a new one with Windows 7 and am having similar problems to others who have asked about how to get rid of the windows security box that pops up when trying to access the network. My problem is a little different. I can see the network machines on the Windows 7 laptop and I can go into one of the other machine's documents on the Windows 7 laptop, but the password box comes up when I click on the Netmax server icon in the the network. The business' shared data file is on the Netmax server, so the new computer is useless to me if it cannot access that data file. I have searched through Windows 7 forum for anything that could help and tried almost everything that was suggested to get rid of the user/password box. Password protection is off in the Windows 7 network sharing. This is not a windows7/XP network issue since I can get into the XP files of the other computers. It is a Windows 7/server issue. I only have one user name and password for that server and I have tried it over and over in the box. I have tried everycombination of user names and passwords suggested in the forums, from "administrator" to "admin" to my XP user name and password. Nothing works. Anyone have Ideas?

Are you using "homegroup" or "workgroup" for networking the win 7 machine?

I am using workgroup, since homegroup only works between Windows 7 computers. All the Xp pro computers are titled "workgroup" for the network purposes. I have gone into the Netmax server (it is a web based one) and it is set for allowing all machines on the network to access the server. Likewise, for the data file on the server.

When I did diagnostics for network problems within Windows 7, it told me I did not have permission to access the files on the server.

I can see the new computer in the Windows XP pro machine's network, and can go into the new computer's documents from the XP pro machine. I can see the other computers in the network on the Windows 7 computer and went into the documents on one of the XP pro computers from the new one and I was able to delete a file on that XP pro computer.

So the network seems to be working fine between the Windows 7 and XP pro computers, EXCEPT for my being able to access the server where our shared data file is. Server is Netmax, set up in 2006. Have set up other new computers in the last few years (all XP pro) and have never had any problems accessing the server on the network.
