In my network adaptor settings...
Control Panel-> Device Manager -> Network Adaptor -> Properties
there is a setting called "Device Sleep on Disconnect".
Disabling that seems to have stopped the problem.

I don't even know what that means, device sleep on disconnect...
Maybe that your ethernet card sleeps when disconnected. How would that wake up other computers?

Hey... I don't write 'em... I just flip 'em.
The only thing I can figure from the name and the behaviour is that it's sending "keep alives" on the network whenever I open any networked folder on my machine... In fact that would explain a lot of thecompletely asininenew behavior I've been seeing since putting in Win7.

Just because it worked a couple of times in testing does not mean there's any perminence to the solution.... Lets give it a week or two in real use and see what happens.
I am glad you found the solution. I checked the properties on my network adapters and I could not find that option. But mine is a desktop.
