    XPsp2 Laptop to Win7 fail

Right, so i know this has been covered, and ive done everything in those threads to remedy the situation, but to no avail.

I have a laptop with xpSp2, and my media center has Win7 ultimate

i connected the two with a straight thru cable, both had a "!" in the sytem tray, but it worked....i could view shared folders, and access files that were on the PC, on the laptop....success!!!!

i copy my archived files from the laptop to the pc(40mins it took) and went out for a while...when i came home i had no connectivity and i have not been able to make it work again since...

I have changed to a crossover cable...no difference.

the laptop says it is connected but no longer sees the pc, and the pc shows a "!" and says unidedtified network, and cant see the laptop

laptop ip is set to 192.168.9.1
    PC is set to 192.168.9.2

i have used multiple cables in both straight and crossover form.

i cannot ping the pc from the laptop, i get timeouts
i cannot ping the laptop from the pc, i get transmit failures

9 hours i have been trying to remedy this, i am ready to throw them both out the window.

    any ideas?

    cheers
    Jason

I don't know if xp, sp2 is related to your problem, but I suggest updating to SP3 or is your version of XP not registered?

my key that is on the bottom of the laptop(genuine) wont work since i formatted and DL'd a new copy(lost oem disk).... so its now a "test version" whats got me stumped is that is WAS working.......if it never worked i would have just gone and bought a router and done it that way(which im guessing would just work. )

is there a way to test my adapters? when i try to run cmd by pressing"shift crtl enter" i get no option to run as admin?

You probably should find someone with a known good router and test both computers on it... see if they connect, and get IP addresses... If that works, it's a matter of sorting out the settings...

FWIW... straight through cables between two computers have been known to damage the Ethernet adaptor hardware.

right, so i have established that my NICs are not damaged, as i unglugged my wireless 4port/router modem and used it to connect the two computers, success! as this is NOT how i wish to have my network set up, i went and bought an 8port switch........plugged it all together and now i cant get them to see each other again.

Am i really that retarded, or have i just been awake far too long?
