Most home users will use: 255.255.255.0 that is what mines is on.

just double check your subnet on the routers...

the router 42.242.120.195 to 42.242.120.254 has a subnet of 255.255.255.192 right now - so if I set the subnet on the 192.168.1.2 to 192,168.1.254 to 255.255.255.192 all should be good ?
11111111.11111111.11111111.11000000<<<<<<leaves you 64 ip address on this subnet

192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.62 would be your usable addresses with a 255.255.255.192 subnet mask. Assuming you use your first usable 192.168.1.1 for the ip address on it's LAN side.

Also with a 255.255.255.192 subnet mask on the 42.x.x.x subnet you will only have 42.242.120.193 - 42.242.120.254 as usable hosts.

I see so the 42 router is correct , but can I have a larger range on the 192 router and will they still play nice together ? anyone ..

You will have only have 62 usable ip addresses on both if you use the 255.255.255.192 subnet. To get the range 192.168.1.2 to 192,168.1.254 you would have to use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

both routers should play well together with different subset masks ?

Yes. A routers main purpose is to allow devices on different networks to communicate.
