Need help in setting up file sharing

I currently have a wireless network setup using a Cisco E-1000 router which is working well.
I am trying to set up file sharing between my Dell 1520 Vista laptop and my Dell xps 9000 Windows 7 desktop.
I am somewhat confused if I have to use MS network setup wizards in Windows 7 or Vista
and how that will affect the wireless network I currently use. Will I need another password?
I have enabled file sharing in my public folders in my laptop and desktop.
I have read many internet pages which are complicated by the two different OS’s I am using
on the desktop and laptop, and if setting up a remote laptop will be needed.
Could someone please guide me on what further steps I must take to accomplish file sharing

You need to enable file sharing on both computers and join a workgroup which will allow you to share between the two. Make sure it's a workgroup and not a homegroup. For posterity's sake just join a workgroup on each computer that has the same name, i.e. myworkgroup. Once you've set up the workgroup it should be fairly straight foward. It wont effect your internet connection at all.

    Here's a decent tutorial:
