Copy to XP - hangs at 'discovering'

All,

The problem is simple: on my Win7 box, I tried to copy three files (two PDF and one PPT, total size < 2 MB) to my networked XP machine. The system was 'discovering' for several minutes before it failed to copy any files. I then tried to copy a single file, and had the same result. When I copied from the XP machine, the transfer was instantaneous.

This problem is not unique to me. I have seen mention of it on other groups, but no solutions have been posted. (Other than this, but this seems to disable some otherwise desirable functionality and is not easily generalized.)

This is really an annoying problem. Any suggested solutions? (This is a relatively fresh build, all drivers are up to date, yada, yada, yada.)

Go through this tutorial about sharing with XP, click on the XP tab, it should help.

chev65,

Thanks for taking time to reply, but this is not the issue. The matter is something specific to Win7. Others have suggested that Win7 is trying to create a preview (or some such) and that is the root cause. Others have indicated that the same problem exists with Vista. However, I have yet to see a reasonable solution.

We had been having this same problem. Complicating it even more, was that another computer running Vista Ultimate was able to copy files to the XP machines without problem - and the setup/domain, etc. was identical on both Vista and Windows 7.

The problem was finally identified to be Norton Antivirus firewall - which was running on several of the XP machines that share files/drives. We had disabled AV as part of our early troubleshooting, but we didn't know that doing so does not affect the Firewall - it keeps running.

Per above, this appears to be specific to Windows 7 and Norton AV/Firewall, and others having this problem may want to look at these type of issues. Note: Having Windows Firewall on didn't cause any problem.

It's not a Windows 7 problem in that case. As someone else already suggested, it's most likely the A/V software you have installed or a third party firewall causing the problem.

I can try disabling my A/V, but I doubt that it is the cause. I do not use a third-party firewall - then tend to cause more problems than they solve.
