Unfortunately there is no quick or easy answer.
I beg to differ. I had problems setting up my network. I made the mistake of using homegroup with a Win 7 machine and an XP machine. However, with Chev's "quick" answers and a couple of others' "easy" suggestions, I got the XP machine working flawlessly in a homegroup. Those links Chev posted helped greatly.

Yes, sometimes the quick and easy does not work. But it is far more productive to start with the quick, easy and simple than delve into the more complex changing IP addresses right off the bat.

Double check you have tested with your antivirus and firewall off.
I have had better luck with sharing in a home network than work.

Back in the days of XP file sharing problems it was often easier to use
Hotline Communications - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I do not know if it works on 7.

Keep at it, this is solvable. You should not have to reinstall.
Quick and easy would mean one thread here, but this part of 7 is often not quick or easy.
I found editing the IP addresses in my router one of the easiest steps. Your mileage may differ.

I think the guides cover this subject pretty well.

There is no need to use static Ip's for this and there are no special router setups required to share with an XP machine. DHCP has already worked many times here already and there is no need to change it.

This piece of advice was already mentioned by me in my second post, please stick to your own answers instead of copying the ones already posted. First you say that my quick easy answers are useless, but now you are coping my responces? You sound just like someone recently expelled from here.

Yes it is quick and easy, there are no special or strange Windows 7 problems that prevent you from sharing with an XP machine. I have been setting up shares with other XP machines since build 7000 which was released over 16 months ago without any problems what so ever. Just because you had problems setting up a share with one of your clients machines does not mean it can't be done quickly and easily. I suspect that lack of user experiance on your part has much to do with this.

The Op simply needs to follow the XP sharing set up guides already posted which have already worked for millions of users. You should do the same if you were having problems.

    nada

thanks for all your advices but still i tried everything and still it wont work

i recently tried to access shared folder from win7 machine. and i cant.
i shared a folder from the systems own drive and i cant access it. it says "windows cannot access ..."
"the network path was not found"

same happens and when i try to access the xp computer.
the really odd thing is when i try to access the win7 through the xp it works fine!
not only that "view workgroup computers" in xp shows me both computers. unlike the win7 that cant even access itself..

    things i tried:
    - static ips.
    - disabling windows firewall
    - disabling antivirus (it doesnt even have a firwall but i tried anyway)
    - "wireless network connection properties" checked all sharing boxes
    - in "Advanced sharing setting" i have "on network discovery" and " on file and printer sharing,... and everything is on
    - both computer are in workgroup.

what is there more to do?

    Hi there
Windows XP often behaves strangely when sharing files with other computers.

The results I've found that usually work (I can't give ANY reason but over time this seems to do the trick I'm NOT a network guru -- this just works as I found by Trial and Error).

Before you start - SWITCH OFF DHCP --give each machine on your Network its OWN internal IP address. Also switch off any "Non computer" Network devices such as media stramers/ network disks /network printers etc as well. By Network disks I mean those one's that are stand alone network disks not "Shared disks " attached to computers on a LAN. You can switch these on again after you've got it all working.

I used to have NO end of problems with DHCP -- especially if you've got other devices such as those nice new stand alone Internet Radio devices, media streamers, network drives, network printers etc etc.

These "Non computer" devices can use an IP address that one of your machines is trying to use and you won't get an error message conflict.

    Before you start :

On a Network it's better to DISABLE DHCP and assign each machine it's own IP address. You'll see the advantage of that too if you want to access a particular machine remotely OUTSIDE your network such as RDP etc.

    Now :

    1) Ensure the XP machine is in the same Network group name as the W7 machines such as MSHOME or WORKGROUP. If it is already then CHANGE to something else, re-boot, then CHANGE IT BACK again. This forces a total reset of Windows XP "Network Discovery".

    2) The XP machine need to have a USER and PASSWORD set -- make it the same user and password as one of the W7 Machines in your network.

    3) ensure file sharing is enabled on the XP machine -- if it is already DISABLE it, re-boot and then RE-ENABLE it again.

    4) connect to the W7 machine file from XP via the IP address \\192.168.x.x\D for example.

This will usually work -- Networking XP was ALWAYS a mega pain -- sometimes randomly ONE XP machine or other would suddenly become invisible to the network.

Connect FROM XP to W7 first and when that works you'll find the XP computer now mapped in the Network list on the W7 machine.

    Cheers
    jimbo

Added - if you DO have things like stand alone Internet Radio devices then you can in most Routers set DHCP to start at a specific IP address -- so still set your LAN computers to specific IP addresses (non DHCP) and allow your "Stand alone Network devices" to be assigned IP addresses via the Router's DHCP outside the range of your fixed LAN computers.

I have a mixed environment here, Win 7, XP, and OSX and it works fine as long as you have the shares and permissions set correctly.
The Win 7 machines are on a Homegroup with their own shares and I have set a separate share for non-homegroup machines. the guides already posted should work for you.

In which case you have problems other than sharing, probably a router compatability problem or a third party program is blocking access. If I had access to your machine it would take me about five minutes to figure out what the problem is, but from here my hands are tied.

As for your antivirus which is no doubt causing the problem,,, I've been there and done that with A/V's, disabling never seems to cut it, you will need to uninstall completely which ever A/V you are using. I wonder if anyone realizes how many times I've had to say that, and more importantly how many time's it's already worked.

This TechNet thread might also be useful to determine what settings aren't correct.
    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...f-ebdc7c39fe7e

Here is what happens when people use third party A/V's and firewalls.
Windows 7 x64 losing network drives

This problem like most others was diagnosed correctly the very first time. At first the Op was hesitant to believe my advice "as always" but then he wisely listened to my advice by completely uninstalling his Outpost firewall and then reinstalling a newer more compatible firewall which miraculously fixed the problem, what a surprize

Yet another A/V software is causing the exact same problems once again, Zone Alarm this time. These are just ones from today. I'll probably have a few more to post by the end of the day. Still don't believe me? Or would you rather keep blaming Win 7 for these types of problems?

Or here is an idea, how about uninstalling your A/V like everyone else here has done and the problem will be fixed. I realize that may be too easy but most often the best fixes are quick and easy.
Windows 7 cannot view Windows XP Shared Folders

I wonder if anyone realizes how many times this exact same scenareo has been played out here in this very forum?
