I beg to differ. I had problems setting up my network. I made the mistake of using homegroup with a Win 7 machine and an XP machine. However, with Chev's "quick" answers and a couple of others' "easy" suggestions, I got the XP machine working flawlessly in a homegroup. Those links Chev posted helped greatly.

Yes, sometimes the quick and easy does not work. But it is far more productive to start with the quick, easy and simple than delve into the more complex changing IP addresses right off the bat.

I found editing the IP addresses in my router one of the easiest steps. Your mileage may differ.

There is no need to use static Ip's for this and there are no special router setups required to share with an XP machine. DHCP has already worked many times here already and there is no need to change it.

This piece of advice was already mentioned by me in my second post, please stick to your own answers instead of copying the ones already posted. First you say that my quick easy answers are useless, but now you are coping my responces? You sound just like someone recently expelled from here.

Yes it is quick and easy, there are no special or strange Windows 7 problems that prevent you from sharing with an XP machine. I have been setting up shares with other XP machines since build 7000 which was released over 16 months ago without any problems what so ever. Just because you had problems setting up a share with one of your clients machines does not mean it can't be done quickly and easily. I suspect that lack of user experiance on your part has much to do with this.

The Op simply needs to follow the XP sharing set up guides already posted which have already worked for millions of users. You should do the same if you were having problems.

I have a mixed environment here, Win 7, XP, and OSX and it works fine as long as you have the shares and permissions set correctly.
The Win 7 machines are on a Homegroup with their own shares and I have set a separate share for non-homegroup machines. the guides already posted should work for you.

not only that "view workgroup computers" in xp shows me both computers. unlike the win7 that cant even access itself..

things i tried:
- static ips.
- disabling windows firewall
- disabling antivirus (it doesnt even have a firwall but i tried anyway)
- "wireless network connection properties" checked all sharing boxes
- in "Advanced sharing setting" i have "on network discovery" and " on file and printer sharing,... and everything is on
- both computer are in workgroup.

In which case you have problems other than sharing, probably a router compatability problem or a third party program is blocking access. If I had access to your machine it would take me about five minutes to figure out what the problem is, but from here my hands are tied.

As for your antivirus which is no doubt causing the problem,,, I've been there and done that with A/V's, disabling never seems to cut it, you will need to uninstall completely which ever A/V you are using. I wonder if anyone realizes how many times I've had to say that, and more importantly how many time's it's already worked.

This problem like most others was diagnosed correctly the very first time. At first the Op was hesitant to believe my advice "as always" but then he wisely listened to my advice by completely uninstalling his Outpost firewall and then reinstalling a newer more compatible firewall which miraculously fixed the problem, what a surprize

Yet another A/V software is causing the exact same problems once again, Zone Alarm this time. These are just ones from today. I'll probably have a few more to post by the end of the day. Still don't believe me? Or would you rather keep blaming Win 7 for these types of problems?

Or here is an idea, how about uninstalling your A/V like everyone else here has done and the problem will be fixed. I realize that may be too easy but most often the best fixes are quick and easy.
