And now, poof, for whatever reason my connection decides it's done being constipated or whatever the heck happened... see how long that lasts. Hopefully... it won't come back. Yet it still has the default gateway thing going on...

Jaws13, I have a PCI Wifi adapter, made by Belkin. It says connected at times, but in actuality, it's not connected. Here's what I did to find out...

Computer networks are made to have "routes". The first thing you want to make sure is that you are indeed connected to your Access Point, which most of the time is your router. So when the indicator says "Connected", try to ping your AP, if it responds - then you are connected to the AP, the Wifi connection is 99% established. Now, to make sure the last 1%, try connecting to other host on the network. I see that you have another computer there, first - try to ping one of them, if it's responding - try opening their share(s). If all returned successful, you are connected 100% to the Wifi and is reachable in the local network.

Now the next step is to make sure that your communication attempts are indeed being sent over the internet, here's how to test it. Open command prompt, type in --> ping google.com
If it replies then you are connected and you should be able to browse the net, if you can't then there's a problem with your browser configuration. What if it doesn't respond? Well, you can try this--> ping 67.222.36.113
It's doing the same thing, I just replaced "google.com" with it's IP address. If it replies then you have a DNS problems. Either your gateway doesn't know/can't connect to it's designated DNS server, or your computer is using it's own DNS server configuration that is pointing to a dead/unreachable server.

    See how it goes...

Ps. When the first step fail, disconnect your Wifi, reconnect, do the whole test again... Still error, disconnect again, rinse and repeat. Make sure that you are close to the AP/high signal strength. I needed to disconnect/reconnect up to 3-4 times to get that Belkin adapter to work. Once it's working, it works like a charm... I don't know what's wrong with it...

Would reformatting fix it, do you think? I know it's about due- I do it every six months or so, especially after hardware upgrades- just got a new CPU, 2 gb more RAM, and the wireless card, so it'd qualify...

You do a reinstall when you change major components, like the motherboard... Upgrading the CPU, as long as it's the same socket on the same motherboard won't change a thing. Adding more memory is too, Windows knows that it has more memories. As for NIC (be it Wireless or Wired) DO NOT mandate a reinstall. I reinstall ever 3-4 years each, because on those intervals I changed my motherboard, effectively changing the whole computer... That demands a reinstall. CPU/Memory/NIC DOES NOT demand a reinstall, it's a wasted effort...

    Added:

You definitely need a reinstall if you changed the chipset, changed the primary storage controller (from SATA to Hardware RAID SAS with battery backup for boot volume), changed memory type (DDR2 to DDR3), changed computer type (from ACPI to Multiprocessor ACPI, NOT Multicore - Multiprocessors, Xeon 5000 series and up), by then - you definitely need a reinstall..

Well, I don't do it because it needs it, more because I find it runs more efficiently. Less gunk. And I did have an issue awhile back- same thing, but went away in a day or so, so I didn't worry about it- right on the tail of a weird Facebook message I got with a suspicious link- I didn't even realize what it was until it was halfway loaded, closed it down... Avast didn't find anything, nor did Spybot... so I figured I was good. Given that the problem's reoccurred, I'm better safe than sorry. Certainly couldn't hurt, right?

And do forgive me if I'm speaking blasphemy. The only real computer knowledge I have is from building and any problems I've encountered.

Ahh, ok... do what you gotta do :)

I personally reinstall when I rebuild my computer. I don't see why I need to reinstall other than that occasion. I never got virus infection (other than XP's stupid firewall not blocking Blaster variant from infecting my computer back then), never had any malware/junkware/whateverware issue. I constantly monitor my network usage, I always check the traffic grapher every few days, I always check netstat, see what's listening on what port, at what PID every few days, update MSE whenever it needs updating, and IF I feel that I'm about to plug a "dangerous" USB thumb drive or whatever dangerous storage media, I'd log off and use Limited user to view the content of that storage media. Never had any problem :) You'd get the hang of it once you reinstall systems about 600-800 systems a year...
(I got a job in a computer store some 9 years ago...)
