I've also have a dir-655 which has been working without problem for years connected to a variety of cable modems (Motorola Surfboard (SB5101), Netgear Modem/Router combo, Linksys Modem/Router combo). Heat has never been an issue.

Channel interference is a probable cause or the problem could be from the Motorola.

Try this tool by Metageek to check for nearby wifi networks & their wifi channels.

In my experience, channel 8 is usually not taken. Never use channels 1 or 11 and try to avoid 6.

Below is taken from my router's configuration:
Firmware Version : 1.32NA, 2009/07/09
Wireless Radio : Enabled
802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n and 802.11g
Channel Width : 40MHz
Channel : 8 <---
Secondary Channel : 4
WISH : Active
Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Configured
Guest Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Not Configured

Most likely the channel your router is using to broadcast is being used by other routers in your area which tends to cause connection drop problems.

Try going into the routers control panel by typing 192.168.0.1 then enter into the URL of your browser. You may need to type in your password or use Admin for the password.

After that go to the wireless tab, then choose the manual wireless set up tab. After that go to the "enable auto scan" uncheck that, then choose a different channel and then hit the "save settings" button. Keep doing that until you find a channel that doesn't drop the connection.

If the 2.4Ghz frequency is overloaded in your area it might take awhile to find an empty channel. The D-link DIR-825 uses the 5Ghz frequency and the 2.4Ghz frequency also so it has more options for finding a clear connection.
Good idea, I'll try that right now since the connection dropped again. Can it possibly be heat problems though? since it has been pretty hot these days here.
i have so many router at my company..and all is under control.some case the router down is because temperature. so the manage not just only router but the temperature. i used air conditioner and can manage of them, when one of the router down. i got notification of that. and i'm going to server room for restart it. take a while time, but that's ok after restarting.
Different type of router . Those routers are large, wired-only, rack mounted, IOS CLI configurable routers. The dir-655 is a small consumer level wireless router with a GUI interface usually not found in or even feasible for a large company. Comparing apples to oranges, both fruit.

FYI: I am CCNA and CompTIA A+ certified. Pending CCNP BSCI & CCNA Security certs

Ok, I'll try this.
Edit: Just downloaded and installed it and ran it, and so far, it has only picked up 2(my dlink, and someone else's) I'm currently using channel 11 while the other person is using channel 10. Are the channels too close?

I'm glad everyone agrees with my original diagnoses of the problem however, I'm pretty sure I already asked the OP to try different channels.

I also posted two examples of the exact model or Motorolla modem having problems with the DIR 655, in case you missed them, I feel this information is relevant in case you keep having connection drop problems after using different channels.

So at least a possiblity of a compatility problem here.

By the way,...The D-link DIR 825 is just a regular wired and wireless router that can broadcast both the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz frequencies. Maybe that is not why I was quoted?

As long as the channel is clear you should be fine. You only need to switch channels and use the one with the least number of possible connections. There are not really any preferred channels that I'm aware of, you just need to use one that isn't overly saturated in your area. The channels 10 and 11 are not too close. If you keep getting connection drop problems then I would consider using a different modem.

Dlink DIR655 Connection drops - my solution

Hi, all!
I realize this is a response to an older post. But, I am a user ("not a tech-head") that knows just enough to be dangerous and troubleshoot computer issues. I depend very heavily on others' responses to forums, and feel the need to respond this issue that I had. I, too, had a Dlink DIR655 that I purchased based on reviews, etc. It dropped connections CONSTANTLY!! It was miserable and I ended up getting 3 new routers from DLink. After the third still did not work, I of course realized that it was something in my setup. However, I purchased a Netgear router because no one at DLink could provide a solution for me. When I got the Netgear (WNDR3400), I had to call for setup advice and in ONE call the Netgear advisor was able to help me figure out that I have a problem with the security setting given the different OS I have (Win7, Vista, XP). I had to upgrade the driver on my wireless network adapter for the Vista machine and it did the trick - completely worked! However, my printer was printing very slow with this router (the Netgear) and so I hooked the Dlink up again just to see if the printer fixed itself and I assumed that what fixed the Netgear would work on the Dlink, but it did not....the Dlink just doesn't work with multiple OS. I upgraded firmware, got new ones, etc. My advice is to bag the Dlink and go with Netgear.

Don't think I haven't read all the threads about this problem, I have. But none of the countless solutions seem to work for me. I used to be able to run CSS on XP very smoothly, but now I can't run it on either OS without it lagging. If anyone knows a solution please post. Thanks in advance
