No Driver in Windows 7 (Or Vista!)

Baah! I hate to admit it, but one of my recent purchases of hardware I can only get a driver for XP! It's a D-Link DWL-AB520 Wireless Adapter.
I don't suppose anyone knows of a way round this, or where I can get a driver? I've tried the D-Link Site and others, but no joy. I think I'm out of luck!

Silly question but i'm gonna ask anyway Have you tried Windows Update? You can plug it in and it should check Automatically, if not you can right-click the device in Device Manager & Update Driver Software.

    Hope this helps :)

Afraid you really are out of luck -- since even in a VM the network adapter still has to work on the host machine.

You could do a test to see if XP compatability mode works -- set the network adapter to the "Real" network adapter even if the "Real" driver doesn't work.

I don't hold out any hope for this but you could just try it as an exercise. If the Host machine doesn't even recognize the hardware in the first place then you've got a problem.

I don't think USB wireless adapters are very expensive so I think you'll just have to toss that one.

    Cheers

Ah well. It doesn't really matter I suppose. I have actually got XP installed on a spare drive caddy with this card installed. But it would be nice if I can make use of it in Windows 7 or Vista.

I purchased this old adapter as I wanted to tinker around with WEP hacking. Don't worry, nothing illegal! Just like everything else, I like to mess about with things techie!

i loved this little adapter as i can be connected to the net and do "wep research" at the same time...
really hopeless when you see 80% of all the ap's are using wep protection and only about 15% have WPA-Tkip and i believe only two ap (other than mine) are using WPA-2

WOW! Many thanks for those links mate. VERY much appreciated. I think looking at it I may 'invest' in that big brother one. lol. Looks like it has a terrific range too, which is superb.

Looks like I'm going to have to take a crash course in using Ubuntu though, as I've always been a bit of a Windows fan. (sorry ). I have got the latest release of Ubuntu, but using it is something else! lol. Back to school time I think.

Well chuffed with the info mate. Nice one.

    Hi all
if you have a new(ish) router ALWAYS use the latest encryption wpa2-psk.
WEP is too easily broken into.

    Cheers

The only bad thing about having wpa2 jim is on home networks. Things like the Wii and PsP dont use wpa2, yet atleast. So i get the gripe if/when i have wpa2 enabled. I'd rather have it myself, but would have to trade a headache for it, here anyways, lol.
