Wow what great knowledge you have! Thanks for the help with getting started. I'm sure I will have questions along the way since I already have one to start with: his current system is running Windows XP. Is this easier to achieve with Windows 7 or can the same be done on XP?

You can use Windows 7 or XP it does not matter. But, Part 1, turning on the RDP (aka RDC) on Window XP is a bit different then on Windows 7.

So he finally came out and said that his workplace blocks Facebook and Myspace lol. There's no need to identify what kind of firewall is up correct?

He needs to be careful here. We forbid Facebook, MySpace, YouTube at work as well. But if someone makes a connection to their home computer from OUR network our tracking systems will still KNOW he is going to Facebook etc. Because that traffic still has to go BACK to his machine. So now let’s say you want to encrypt and VPN so no one can see where you are going. We will still know because we will notice a machine on the network connected to an outside machine for extended time or know that it is a private home IP raising suspicion making the security group start monitoring the PC. From their point of view it may be a rogue software, virus, spyware or malware. At any rate he will get caught. I don't know what his technology user agreement states but if termination is an option I would highly recommend he does not do this. The security group and the networking group will catch you quickly.
