Seems like it may be a router problem in this case because changing to a different router seemed to create this problem for you. I wasn't reading that very clearly, sorry bout that.

You should try to install the latest firmware for that router, it will be different firmware depending on the router hardware version. Trying different types of router security settings or a different router channel may also help.

Well, I upgraded the firmware from DD-WRT v24-sp2 Build 12533 to Build 13064, and now the download speed has been stable on 1 MB/s for about 15 minutes... maybe it this was the solution, crossing my fingers, and I'm über happy. thx!
Will post back later with results of further testing

Lets hope for the best. If not we can enter the IP config info manually and go from there.

Well, I would say that the problem is solved. The speed hasn't dropped since I updated the router's firmware, and I have downloaded quite a bit with full speed. JOY ;D

I'm glad to hear that Mizzhell.

I've seen many networking problems fixed this way so I'm not too surprized that upgrading the firmware worked for you.

The interesting thing is that the Windows Compatiblity list showed that no effort is required to get that router working with Windows 7. Luckily I don't believe everything I read.

When it comes to firmware updates you should always use the latest version to avoid problems.
