OK tried all these things and re-started both pcs but unfortunately NONE of them have worked!

Getting desperate, very 'computered out' and need to get some food so will log on again tomorrow when hopefully someone will come up with another idea to resolve the problem!

Many thanks everyone for helping this newbie to Win7.

Looks like it's time to ask about which A/V software you are using?

LOL as usual, Both of those are the cause of your problems. Always always get your network up and running before installing any type of A/V software. I realize that this is contrary to what Windows would have you believe. If you want help faster next time you need to first mention which A/V's are involved.

You may need to uninstall them both to fix this problem. You can usually reinstall them later after you get everything working at which point they should be able to see your network connection and make rules accordingly.

I won't even try to figure out the network set up procedures and rules on every A/V because there are just too many of them and they all cause problems with networking.

Believe me this isn't the first time and won't be the last... Everyone makes these mistakes and what kills me is that it's not even a Windows 7 problem. Anyway, you should have much better luck after uninstalling them.

I do hope so - many thanks for all your help.

Been around pcs long enough to know that is the first rule but think I just lost sight of it because A/V was already installed on both pcs, I was really struggling with a new operating system and I am the only reasonably pc literate person in this house!

Let you tomorrow how I get on.

Logging off now to re-fuel.

Couldn't sleep so, as suggested, I unistalled the A/V on both pc's and after reviewing the permissions on the XP got everything to share both ways! Cannot believe I overlooked that especially as it would have saved so much time for both of us!

Determined to stick with Win 7 even though I cannot load couple programs, even in compatibility mode, that I really need for my work. Sure there must be way around that as well once I start looking.

Thank you so much for all your help chev65 and sorry for forgetting the first rule!

It's usually those simple things that cause the problems. Permissions are very tight with Windows 7 and if they didn't make it that way people would be complaining that it isn't secure enough. Older programs can be a problem but usually can be made to work using compatiblity mode. Usually you can get it to work or upgrade to a newer version of the program. Hope you get your older program problem sorted out.

If you are using a 64-bit version of Windows 7, should it be 64-bit QWORD rather than 32-bit DWORD?
