    VPN not accepting incoming connections.

    Protocol is PPTP

It hangs on "Verifying username and password" from the client machines

the LAN settings should be fine as this machine is dual booted and clients connect to Ubuntu Server without issue. Win7 gives the following error after getting "stuck" on "Verifying username and password..."

"Disconnected. Error 721. The remote computer did not respond"

I have tried with Windows Firewall on (with IP Protocol 47 [gre] and pptp connections enabled/allowed) and off.

I have set the Incoming connection up with DHCP enabled and also 'Ranged' IP's (also with and without DNS servers provided)

I have tried a set up with 'Allow callers to specify IP Addresses" and then setting up a client on another network with an IP in the range.

I have Deleted/recreated the Incoming connection with Explorer.exe being runas.. Administrator (I was grasping for straws so I tried this)

I have tried all of the above from a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate. I have also tried all of the above on another computer, on another network with Win7 Ultimate with the same results.

I have, in fact, checked my ports on win7 and 1723 is opened and the service is listening.

Netstat -ano shows TCP 1723 (but no UDP 1701. Could that be the issue?)

I have unchecked using ipv6 settings.

Router logs shows incoming connections being passed but Event Viewer in Windows show nothing with a standard window VPN connection. Rasdial from the client machine shows the following in Event Viewer:

"A connection between the VPN server and the VPN client <%client IP%> has been established, but the VPN connection cannot be completed. The most common cause for this is that a firewall or router between the VPN server and the VPN client is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) packets (protocol 47)."

Let me know if I need to supply any further information. ANY input would be appreciated.

IP address is, of course, Static on the Host machine. Internet connection is fine.

I had disabled the firewalls on the Modem and router AND Windows firewall was off but 1723 and "protocol 47" + GRE was "allowed" just in case...

Yeah. You read that right. I added a new policy to cover my bases here.

I saw a lot of this in Vista forums but there wasn't a cure there though it appeared to be the same issue.

I dont use any proprietary or thuird-party firewall and with Windows firewall set to "Off" could it REALLY be a firewall issue?

    Looking futher into error 721.
Error 721: Remote PPP peer or computer is not responding. If you have tried many thing other people suggest like rebooting, reloading hardware and re-installing the VPN or dial in connection, you still get the same problem. I will suggest to check the router settings and make sure TCP Port 1723, IP Protocol 47 (GRE) are opened. Also make sure that the router has the PPTP enabled and not firewall block the traffic. On the RAS server, check the DHCP settings.

    Technet says this...
To resolve this issue, configure the network firewall to permit GRE protocol 47. Also, make sure that the network firewall permits TCP traffic on port 1723. Both of these conditions must be met to establish VPN connectivity by using PPTP.

Looks like you already did that but it may need to be done on both the client and server router settings. What seems to work for some is to delate then recreate the VPN connections then try to connect again.

Depending on the router the firmware might also need to be updated.

The Host is dual booted with Ubuntu Server and provided I am in Ubuntu, I can pptp into it without issue. When the same machine is booted into Windows, I cannot pptp from the same location i had previously been able to remote into the Ubuntu side. This should rule out the Host network's settings, (as far as router and modem,) the client's firewall and network settings and also the physical hardware, right? I would think that pptp is pptp no matter what, right? I have the host set up as static IP (the same IP in both OS's for the sake of convenience) and one side works while the other doesn't on the same computer. I'm befuddled.

Everything was seeming set up right. I tried this from my GF's laptop and I was able to vpn to it. I exported her Firewall policies down and imported them into mine after setting my machine to "Default policy." I also changed the CAT5 cable to a different jack on the router. For whatever reason, i was able to connect (sporadically.) I cannot consistently connect to it but I have confirmed that it works. It doesnt make sense to me because I had turn off ALL of the windows firewall settings (Public, Private and Domain) and it wouldn't connect initially. The jack on the router I change from worked in Ubuntu Server. I dont know what happened but...

I am having the same problem. I see in a number of locations on the internet that people save to enable GRE protocol 47 but I see no way of doing so.

I am not a novice and I have tried everything including swapping out routers. I can see the connection coming in to port 1723 in my router log and being forwarded to the right address on my LAN.

I have attempted every fix I can find on the internet but to now avail. The funny thing is that I can connect into my employer's VPN server just fine.

I have set up my own server using Windows 7 (via adding an incoming connection from the Network Connections -> Change Adapters option).

This should be a slam dunk but I keep getting the dreaded 807 error.

It is not a firewall issue as I have tried turning off the firewall. From the number of problems i have seen on the web, I am wondering if this is a bug.
