To me it suggests that we might just possibly need a new thread where we can attempt to cross-reference these connectivity issues by indexing the following:
The reason I am making such a suggestion is because any solution to this kind of problem is likely to be quite different for any given set of hardware and software combinations.
- Motherboard type and/or NIC chipset(s) having the problem
- CPU Architecture (x86 or x64)
- Upgrade or clean install
- Driver details (i.e. manufacturer and version of driver experiencing connectivity issues)
The trends I have observed from this thread are that this dropped connection problem can happen with practically any type of NIC, but occurs more frequently for folks that have performed an upgrade install on a 64-bit Vista machine. Obviously there are just too many variables in play, and this thread has now grown so large that finding those useful nuggets of information that do exist here takes quite a bit of effort, can be easy to miss, and may not apply to your specific configuration.
In my particular case, I replaced the generic Microsoft ethernet drivers for my nForce 680i SLI equipped motherboard with those I obtained directly from the nVidia support site (ethernet driver version 73.14). This has seemed to correct the problems I had previously been experiencing with both of my onboard NICs, and I have not suffered any dropped LAN/Internet connections in nearly a week (other than a brief Comcast broadband outage last Friday, but that was on the ISP side of the equation).
PS - I'd like to add that I have had no such issues on either of the x86 machines I have upgraded, nor the x64 machine on which I performed a clean install.
