Are they both on the same network?

Have you enabled incoming RDC connections on XP?

If they aren't bothbon the same network you need to configure the router to forward the RDC port coming via the Internet to go straight to the XP Machine, have you also disabled all appropriate firewalls or made exceptions?

A simpler alternative could be to use a program such as TeamViewer (TeamViewer - Free Remote Access and Remote Desktop Sharing over the Internet).

I have never got RDC to work when set up manually (using Windows Home Server which automates the process using PnP however is quite straight forward but requires you to build your own media server so isn't really that practical).

    Check out:
Windows XP: Get Started Using Remote Desktop

and Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) - Network.

You are also required to have the same account credentials on every PC you use.

For instance you can't login to osholt with the password xyz on a remote connection unless there is also an account on your PC with the username osholt and password xyz.

This does not apply to server environments, home groups or active directory environments entirely.
