Says we have shared-key, but we have WEP with open authentication

We keep getting an error that says we have a shared-key authentication. But we have another PC connected on this machine that says we have WEP with Open authentication.

When we try to set up a network with Open authentication, it won't let us select encryption type WEP on the Manually Connect to a wireless network. It just greys out the authentication into None, and it won't allow us to enter our security key.

I know we must be doing something wrong. Can anyone help?

If I remember correctly, to be able to select WEP in the "Encryption Type", you need to select "WEP Open system authentication with Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)" in the "Security type". If the "No authentication (Open)" security type is selected, "None" is selected in "Encryption type". But all this also depends on the capabilities of your router.

BTW, WEP is not at all secure, so unless you have cogent reasons for sticking to it, I suggest you switch to one of the WPA modes.

Bill, thanks. The only reason for using WEP open is that every other machine in the house is already keyed for that and I just dread the thought of having to set everything up again. I'm on the line with tech support right now, though, and I suspect that's going to be the answer. It simply won't recognize it as WEP open.
