Its not where you are but where the ISP origin point is.

IP addresses are not based on exact physical locations.

IP addresses are country or region specific meaning if you live in England you get an English IP address starting with 81.x.x.x or another English IP.

It turns out that my IP ISP (BT) distributes IP Addresses on a regional basis, so I in fact get an IP address from the South East of England.

When IP lookup sites tell me my location they just pick a random major town in the South East of England, it changes with every new IP. I do not get one which can pinpoint my house, road etc.

This happens because IP addresses are issued dynamically meaning that after x amount of time you get a new IP address and they are near impossible to put into a database with geographic co-ordinates attached.

If you had a virus and it was bad enough they could read any data on your computer. They wouldnt need your ip if you have personal data on the computer.

Best defense, a good AV, a software firewall, and a nat router.

Please dont worry about that it will not happen. Worry about a virus and finding all the personal things in your life, Social Security number, passwords, bank accounts.
