Homegroup over wireless is super slow

I've noticed when doing large file transfers from my laptop and desktop, I'm only getting about 2mb/s in transfer speed.

The laptop (7200 rpm drive) is running unsecured on a wireless g, connected to my D Link DGL-4300, my desktop (10k rpm drive) is connected directly to the router on a 100mbit port.

On my router's status page, I can see my laptop has a 100% signal strength, with a rate of 54. So this should give me around 6-7mb/s. Unfortunately, I'm only getting around 2mb/s.

Both computers are running Win 7. No other downloads/uploads. No firewalls either.

So, any idea why my laptop is stuck at a transfer rate of only 2mb/s?

54 Mbps is Theoretical maximum speed attainable for the 802.11g WiFi standard. Actual attainable speeds can vary heavily depending on your hardware, and other factors; often actual throughput is between 16-24 Mbps. Just for the sake of comparison, i tried copying a file from another PC i had hardwired to a network; a setup similar to yours, and got the same speed. (2.1MB/s) So that speed seems normal IMHO.
