Trouble opening files from Snap Server

    Hello Everyone,

My first post so I'm hoping I'm in the right section.

We have a Snap server at one of our offices and a staff member who has a Windows 7 Ultimate machine. He is able to see the network drives on the Snap Server and is able to browse the folders. When he tries to open a file, either Word, Excel etc the program will hang for some time, Not Responding will be displayed in the top left hand corner. It will stay in this fashion for anywhere between 2 - 6 minutes and then finally open.
On a WinXP machine I have been able to open the same files, irrespective of file size and type, within a matter of second. It just appears to be the Win7 machine that is having issues.
Has anyone come across this sort of thing before?

    Thanks,

    Sean

Just an update. Found that when the staff member opens an Adobe file it opens up immediately. It seems to be the office products that are having trouble.

I tried the above fix but it only made matters worse. The laptop was very slow to start up and the login script didn't appear to run.
The machine is in another state so access is done remotely and sporadically.

I may have a solution to your problem. I have a Snap Server that I frequently connect to through Windows XP and other network devices. However after upgrading to Windows 7 I have been able to connect but unable to write to the Snap Server.

After investigating, I found that I was connecting as a guest to the Snap Server and therefore did not have write access. The same problem happened in XP, and I added the credentials to the Snap Server into the managed passwords portion of the userpassword2 control panel. The Windows 7 version of manage passwords is Credential Manager, under the Users and Groups control panel. However I have been unsuccessful in getting this to work with the Snap Server. I end up just getting logged into the Snap Serve as guest, which does not have write access. I confirmed this by clicking on Active Users in the web admin of the Snap Server. The only way I have gotten it to work is by temporarily giving the everyone security group full access to the server. I believe Credential Manager does not work because it is encrypting the username and password somehow, and may be incompatible with the authentication of the Snap Server.

The reason why your Word and Excel docs aren't opening is because it tries to write a temp file on the server. If you are in Win 7 and are connecting to your Snap Server, chances are that you are logged in as a guest, which mean you may not have write access, which is required for a doc to be opened in that location. Confirm by double checking the admin web access and see who is logged into the snap server from the Windows 7 computer. Mines just shows up as gibberish.

Hope this helps. I will keep investigating. Thanks.
