I typically use two monitors without 3rd party apps. What is it you want to do that requires additional software?
i use a laptop with a docking station, the laptop is always on hibernate mode, and every time i dock it in, i have to drag the LCD to the right and adjust the resolution which is a pain in the butt.
so am using a program called UltraMon that takes care of that and it also gives you a nice option to add a taskbar on the extended mon to minimize the windows, you can also create multipile profiles if you like, there is also an option to export the settings to use it later in case you had to format the pc...greate app, there is much more to it.

I see what you mean. I too have experienced difficulty with multiple monitors when they are not always plugged in, which is often the case with a laptop. It would be nice if they fixed it, but I have no idea how they would. The problem seems to be related to whether you plug/unplug the cable when the computer is sleeping/hibernating, as opposed to doing so just before you hibernate (or after you bring it out).

The benefits of UAC have been well documented on this website, most recently I believe in this topic.

I think WinMin should be the basic start point and then be allowed to pick and choose from a list of functions and programs to install. Basically similar Linux installations. After all..if we are totally honest, 99% of us don't use probably 80% of the items in Control Panel. Yes, the should be a default option to load all as at present because many people just want the easy way to install/upgrade their systems, but for the more savvy out here, choice would be a fine thing!!
I think you will get as many for as against that option. The one big kink in that, that I see, is it will break the anytime upgrade feature. Right now you can plug in your product code and the extra features are enabled without having to put in your install media. Having to insert your windows 7 DVD to do the upgrade could be a real pain if you are trying to do it on a netbook that doesn't have an optical drive and didn't come with a DVD of any type. Since most of the netbooks come out of the box with starter edition installed, I can see that feature being used a lot in that case. Just my 2 cents.
I haven't gone out of my way to prove it but it appears to me that going into the "add remove windows features" doesn't actually remove them, it just hides them, makes them unavailable.

I don't believe that has ever been a problem for me. Is it common?
Also I second the bringing back the defragmenter's GUI. I miss it! Until then I use Auslogics. Bring it back, Microsoft!

I cannot, personally, think of any task, that is best served by a total lack of a fancy GUI, than that of drive de-fragmenting.
Even if I decide to run a 3rd party app to provide better functionality, I invariably run the task in the background and set to hide, the presence of a GUI for this type of task will likely double, (or more), the application memory footprint.

Perhaps having a choice would be the best solution. Those that want a GUI may have it. Those that do not, may not.

I've experienced it on more than one occasion. I don't know what triggers it but it is really annoying when it happens. I use dual monitors so I like the app to open full screen on my monitor of choice.

Agreed. Some things are better when they are simple.

Also agreed. There's never 100% consensus on anything, so having the choice is best.
