To do this, you will want to use separate Firefox profiles.

If you're not familiar with profiles:

Profile Manager - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

1. Close Firefox, start the Profile Manager, create a new profile for FF 4.0; give it a recognizable name. Close Profile Manager.

2. Download and install beta, but do not start it. Create a shortcut to it, that should look similar to this:

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 4.0 Beta 2\firefox.exe" -p "Beta4" -no-remote

Translation: This link will start 4.0, using its own profile, which I, in my usual fit of total brilliancy, named "Beta4"; that is the `p "Beta4" part of the link.

The `no-remote' part allows you to run both 3.6.x and Beta 4 at the same time.

I'm not going to go into a discussion of the risks of using beta releases, nor the fact that very few FF extensions currently work with Beta 3 (in fact, a few that worked with Beta were disabled in Beta 3; such matters are not germane to your question.

It might be your AV
I'm using MSE Beta. I'll have to look into it further. Sometimes goes for up to 30 seconds. HD running full bore.
After getting my plumbing done, I checked my add-ons. Beef Taco 1.3.0 add-on was the culprit.

I love the new beta, but I can't wait for Beta 5 when the whole Mozilla 2 thing gets implemented! It's going to be awesome! Hopefully... *remembers Firefox 3.5 claims*

Can anyone tell me if Beta 3 still treats tabs like separate instances of Firefox in the Win 7 taskbar? I haven't had a chance to D/L it myself (waiting on certain addons).

Yes it does.
I was afraid of that. Does anyone else find that terribly inconvenient?

I do as a matter of fact. I liked it better with a single instance in the taskbar.
