    Window 7 Pre-BETA Warning

    Posted: 22 Dec 2008
I have seen this before but in view of the problems with IE at the moment, it is worth re-iterating. I am not sure how accurate the report is, but the claim is that the patch for the latest critical bug in Internet Explorer is not available to W7 pre-beta users? The same claim was also made in a post I saw from Ed Bott, although I've lost that link(??)

"If you have a copy of Windows 7, downloaded from a torrent, it is not the latest build. When Microsoft released the patch for the major security vulnerability of Internet Explorer 8, it was only for the latest Windows 7 build. The current torrent Windows 7 Internet Explorer cannot be updated. If you visit one of the thousands of websites that are affected by the security hole, you will get infected. The only solution is to drop your Windows 7 or use a different browser."

the update does download and you can install it even it if it wont download....

only tried it on 6801 as i have recovered from a virus i self initiated...lol
    well i was bored.....

    edit: here's the link

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960714

    havent tried it in 6956
will try it after Christmas if no one has done it yet as i have to get my lappy repaired (a crack on the back vent....) and as this laptop is the only machine in my arsenal currently being able to stomach a vm of windows 7 or vista (i should really upgrade my server...lol)
    does not look good...lol
    ---------------------just a theory----------------------------------------
actually given the info MS gives us you can actually do it yourself ( you have to extract all the files from the update and using the info from the link search for the files and update them with the extracted ones....
    just a hunch...

Thanks DA, as you could see I was a bit hesitant about it's accuracy. Are you saying it shows up as an Update?

    Hi All,

If I might just clarify ...

The official builds released (6801) are OK and WU patches fine on auto

It's the unofficial releases that may have a problem (69x6)

6936 is an official release that came directly from Microsoft to hardware vendors for driver compliance testing. I received it this way. Then *someone I know* sent it to Rafael so he could update blue badge to rev3 so that it would be unlocked. I do believe the person he worked with is the one that released the torrent of it. The patch works fine on 6936.

6956 is the only theft version that the patch does not work on.

"Drop Windows 7, or use a different browser"

Wow that's a hard one... There are far better browsers than IE so I think we know the answer to that.

Just to clarify it again: the patch is available to those using build number 6801; it installed in mine through Windows Update.

Just a warning though on the patch. Secunia says a fully patched IE7 is STILL vulnerable to the latest exploits.
