    Memristor revolution backed by HP

    Posted: 02 Sep 2010
Electronics giant HP has joined the world's second-largest memory chip maker Hynix to manufacture a novel member of the electronics family.
The deal will see "memristors" - first demonstrated by HP in 2006 - mass produced for the first time.
Memristors promise significantly greater memory storage requiring less energy and space, and may eventually also be employed in processors.
HP says the first memristors should be widely available in about three years.

Should we save our money and stay away from SSD?

Yes, the new hardware revolution is coming, save your money.

...and wait at least three years...let's hold off on that decision a bit... SSD prices are dropping fast and the performance is quite nice.

Q4 should be interesting for the SSD market.

The memristors are a fantastic development and promise to bring some incredible breakthroughs in the near future.
I think it will start replacing flash memory in 3-5 years, if everything proves acceptable then to replace RAM and storage in another +3 years, the processor maybe another few years after that.

Or, it could take off like a rocket and in 3 years we're all walking around with 10x the power of todays desktop computers in half the size of our current cell phone.

Gotta like the possibilities of new Tech.

I guess my point really is, 3 years aint that far away and prices don't generally drop that quickly.
If one could hold out till then, I think that might be the wiser move. Why waste money (unless you have it to waste)? By then, If this doens't exactly pan out, SSD's will be far cheaper and larger anyway.

    Just a thought.

    Hi there
now usually these type of announcements are just Vapourware since so much can happen in 3 years -- 3 years ago W7 was barely in the rumour mill stage --now look at it. In the Computer Industry 3 years is almost a geological age.

However this is actually SIGNIFICANT technology which does promise a really exciting future.

It's going to be tough if you need to upgrade machines or equipment soon. However unless you are a Gear Freak I'd go for the best CURRENT hardware and SSD's when the price drops hugely due to the new technology and go for the new stuff after the first generation early adopters have ironed out most of the bugs and defects.

    Cheers
