@yowanvista Mine is as shown above "greyed out". Might want to go to help > about and see if you aren't in the x86 version. Windows 7 x64 has both the x86 and x64 versions of IE 8. Installing the x64 beta for IE 9 also installs both versions. The taskbar and start menu shortcuts open the x86 version. you have to go to all programs to see the Internet Explorer (64 bit) Icon.
Mine IS greyed out in the 64 bit version - can't be set a default. It is also greyed out in the 32 bit version, maybe because I set the 32 bit version as default on install or first launch.
I made FF my default browser, went back to IE 9 64 bit and was able to click on the make default button, which was now NOT greyed out.
I'm guessing. it makes IE the default browser, but maybe the not the 64 version???
ETA - Just opend up a link from an email - opened IE 32 bit - guess the 64 bit can't be set a default,
