Why are we celebrating the fact that MS can not develop a secure OS?
That it has to create this massive security patch called MSE?
How can MS develop a totally secure OS for use around the world with an almost infinite number of combination of hardware and software and uses from the home user to the corporate world to government? Just getting an OS to work is a Herculean task. There is no OS out there, even custom ones' that is 100% secure.
Don't get me wrong MSE is a giant step forward, and I know MS are not responsible for viruses etc -
but it is the vulnerablility of their OS that encourages the market.
I beg to differ. It is the widespread use of Windows and greed that encourages the market, not vulnerability. 15 years ago, most malware was in the form of destructive pranks. Today, most malware is about controlling your system for nefarious purposes and stealing identity and financial access - greed.
If I were going to steal access to bank accounts, credit cards, etc through a computer program or hacking, I would not waste my time on Apple or other OS's. I would put my efforts into Windows because that is what the overwhelming majority of folks around the world use. It is not because Windows is less secure; it is because of the payoff if I am successful.

So we should really be GLAD that MS itself is getting interested in Windows security - particularly as there isn't much help from within the INTEL architecture such as providing Privileged and Standard modes of execution.

I'm curious ... why would you say there "isn't much help" from within the INTEL architecture? If memory serves, there are at-least 3-rings of privilege associated with code running on these processors. I can't imagine that all Windows code is running in Ring 0. Seems to me that O/S security could be as tight as on a 360 if it were written with the processor's built-in security in mind.
Today's PC O/S code is a little more complex than what was running on a 360, I think. Securing such a rich environment is pretty tough.

Happy Birth Day MSE. MSE is doing a great job for a little one year old baby. To answer why the system wasn't built in the first place 100 % secure. That will never happen because there are thousands of people trying to hack it or break it every day. Even Microsoft doesn't have a crystal ball to look into the future. They are probably working on that crystal ball thing.

It has been on my computer since release and well so far I am very happy with it.
I just love how it uses almost no system resources and is so simple to use. One heck of a great program to use considering it is free!

I'm loving MSE as I usually have no idea about anti virus software but MSE is amazing to me.

What is amzing too me is that under my History Tab I have never had one item there. It makes me wonder sometimes if it's ever doing anything. How can I never have something trying to attack me? However, on the flip side I have never had a virus or anything happen to my computer since installing it after it 1st came out. I guess I shouldn't be concerned as long as it's doing something.

I completely agree. That's because I decided to try out the new Avast 5 and replace MSE for a while, but seeing as how I got the same test results with some infected files/malware infected websites, I jumped back to MSE :)
Any news on the version 2?, by the way?
