    Phishers Target WoW Players Through In-Game Mail System

    Security researchers from Trend Micro warn that World of Warcraft players are being targeted through the game's internal mail system by phishers looking to steal their Battle.net credentials.

    World of Warcraft (WoW) is the world's most popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), with over 11.5 million users, who pay a monthly subscription.

    The game is developed by Blizzard Entertainment, a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, which is also responsible for other highly popular game franchises like Starcraft or Diablo.

    Since 2009, WoW players have been using accounts for the company's online service called Battle.net in order to play the game.

    WoW has both an in-game chat and an internal mail system, which allows users to communicate with each other.

    Rogue chat messages (whispers) have been used to direct players to phishing pages for a while now, but Trend Micro researchers warn that attackers are increasingly impersonating game administrators.

    The messages attempt to scare users into thinking that there is something wrong with their account and they risk getting suspended unless they log into a website and perform a special action.

    On the server i play on, in Stormwind someone hacked it so that theres a bunch of level 1's floating in mid air. They spell out the name of websites such as the ones mentioned in the artical about phishing attacks. After awhile they do the /sleep emote and they all fall to the groud and spell the name of the website out on the ground lol.

    Its actually really annoying because the /say chat gets spamed really bad if you are in that area when they do it (every few seconds). Its been goin on for months (at least 6) and blizzard hasnt done anything about it. Makes you wonder if they even care.

    Actually I just want to look at it as Level 1 bots synchronized nicely in groups to do stuff like that seem awesome

    That's not any news -- well, maybe after 5 years playing, we see a thing or two in this game.

    Anyway, yep, after that much scam players were receiving, Blizzard changed the chat UI to add a blue Blizz logo before names of real Blizzard game masters, and massively enforced you should only trust a GM if he/she has the blue Blizz logo.

    Blizzard have made soooooo much money off that game that if it were to crash out tomorrow, they might not blink an eye to even trying to fix it.

    They might however, bring about WOW2. And rake in even more money. Pay to Play games! What a racket.

    Not faulting them for the franchise they created.
    I just don't see the point in another monthly bill JUst to play a game.
