Was that a Dell model? Following Vista's disappointed response Dell started offering the choice of which OS you wanted installed including the option for Linux. "Give me 7 or give me nothing!" You ordered a blank drive. Good one!!!

I looked into a Dell, but it turns out they won't sell you one without an OS (ba*****s).

Dump the hard drive first thing and put in a blank one! That way you can also see a larger drive to start off with rather then running out of space once you have 7 going. (besides getting rid of all that Dell crud they stick on)

I ordered mine from here, CyberPower Inc. - UNLEASH THE POWER - Create the PC of your dreams, and purchased with a bigger, blank HDD. Decided not to go with the Dell, because I could get a better laptop from here for about the same price.

I spent $1250 on this:
  • Notebook: MSI MS-1722 Notebook 17" Widescreen WSXGA+ 1680x1050 Pixels w/ NVIDIA GeForce GO 9600M-GT 512MB Video, 2.0 Mega Pixels Webcam, HDMI Port, Intel Penryn, & Intel 5300 802.11a/g/n Wireless

  • CPU: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Mobile T9550 Dual-Core Processor @ 2.66GHz 1066FSB 6MB L2 Cache
  • MOTHERBOARD: Mobile Intel PM45 + ICH-9M Chipset Mainboard

I recall taking an OEM HP install with x86 and installing x64 from a torrent for a clean install.
I called MS to get the licence key and there was no issue at all.
I was nervous about them rejecting it though.

Is it possible to just call them for a licence key with the old Vista key so that you can upgrade?

Especially important as ....of course.....i have already installed 7 over the x64 Vista

Upgrade of Clean Install you choose

Vista Ultimate Upgrade package was about 100.00 cheaper than Retail.
You can clean install or upgrade install with it... Clean install if you choose only do not enter a KEY when ask, your key will fail, it is a UPGRADE KEY. continue with install, once your finished.. then boot to HDD and when Vista is open, insert the DVD again, when ask click UPGRADE, when ASK insert your KEY, it will accept cause you have an UPGRADE KEY. when it is finished, activate by : start -> type cmd (run as admin) @ popup type slmgr.vbs -ato, wait till popup say your activated.
The same can be done with Windows 7.
I currently am running Vista SP2 upgrade to Win7 7022 upgrade thru Win7 7231.

upgrade pricing pressure from Apple
Ok MS, Apple has just applied some serious pricing pressure for upgrading. Due in September, current Mac owners can upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard for only $29!! Now, I know I know, the OS's are very different and I don't expect MS to go THAT low for Vista owners...but come on! You just...
