In all that time MS has offered a browser along with their own OS which is what the EU is squaking over to begin with and not looking at the simple fact that MS is providing the courtesy of including a browser with their own product even if you would rather use something else. But what the EU also forget is just how many new softwares companies have been started up simply because most often which OS do you find running on any desktop?

MS grew big from the start by first offering a GUI(Graphical User Interface) to an otherwise dos screen using the keyboard commands to start and run programming as well as prewritten programs. Success #1! Early start once the internet was opened up at the end of the Cold War? Success #2! Worldwide used OS? Success story #3!

"someone" didn't like that! With the huge successes one corporation had the EU couldn't accept that the same would "include" various things like a browser and media player in the MS operating system instead of allowing some other company to be the dominant factor there by being the one and only browser company where MS would have to go through them.

Instead MS simply kept growing and growing and offering even more options as well as included features. At least MS has taken it upon themselves to make IE an option you can remove if you choose to do so in favor of another browser as well as coming up with a separate form of Windows to appease the EU to obviously no avail by the looks of things.

The above doesn't bother the EU committee, MS can grow to the sky if they want to. Just if they want to sell their goods in the EU they must follow the rules of trade in the EU common market.

The EU rulings (except the last which hasn't been litigated yet) which MS found illegal have been found legal by the EU courts.
So they have to abide by them or not sell their goods or get sanctioned.

Life's a bitch and then you die.

    Here she is :

    Intel fined €1.1bn.

The EU executive said Intel paid computer makers to postpone or cancel plans to launch products that used AMD chips, paid illegal, secret rebates so computer makers would use mostly or entirely Intel chips, and paid a major retailer to stock only computers with its chips.

... eclipses the previous record €497m fine brought against Microsoft in 2004 for freezing out competitors.. Microsoft was also subsequently subjected to a further €899m fine for failing to comply with the original cease and desist order.

Don't forget the best part of that one!

"The EU executive said Intel paid computer makers to postpone or cancel plans to launch products that used AMD chips, paid illegal, secret rebates so computer makers would use mostly or entirely Intel chips, and paid a major retailer to stock only computers with its chips.

Paul Otellini, the chief executive of Intel, said his company took "strong exception" to the decision and would appeal.
He said in a statement: "We believe the decision is wrong and ignores the reality of a highly competitive microprocessor marketplace – characterised by constant innovation, improved product performance and lower prices. There has been absolutely zero harm to consumers."

"The original 48-page ,colourfully worded lawsuit filed by AMD in 2005, alleged that Intel had "resorted to old-fashioned threats, intimidation and kneecapping" to build its near monopoly in the market for x86 microprocessors, the chips that run personal computers.

AMD has already successfully convinced competition authorities in Japan and South Korea to rule against Intel. Intel is appealing against the Japanese ruling."That suggests MS isn't the real bad boy abusing it's position simply by having included a browser and media player in it's own OS while you see a cpu manufacturer attempting to black ball another company out of a market entirely. hhmmm...

MS/Intel where as close to a cartel as you can get. The EU should investigate where Intel used it's leverage to push MS and vice-versa.

    Would make an interesting case......

As you well know this has been going on for the last decade or so! I think we might end with a good 100 new threads or more simply trying to keep up iwth it all!

The part that many have to look at is how all this will have an impact on the average user who is soon to see a new version of Windows without any browser simply the OS. The oem manifacturers would then simply provide a separate disk with various browsers along with prebuilt machines.

But what happens to the custom builder who goes out and buys a new disk only "without any browser" to install 7 on a new drive?

You can actually look at any large grouping of smaller companies under wing with a large corporation and point fingers at monopolizing in some way. At the same time paying a few fines is simply looked at as the "cost of doing business as usual" for them while it's the little guy(typical pc user, novice to mid skilled) that ends up being stepped on a bit.

"Meanwhile it's friday night, early saturday in some places and time to face the.... daa da dat dadaaaaa....(trumpets sound) "Night Hawk vs. petrossa face off". But first a word from our sponsor!"

Well if you want to start a new thread you first have to come out with a title for it! That looked like a good one for the chillout room!
