Just had a thought.. How can they remove 'all' the browser stuff when many help files rely heavily on a browser to even function. for example, '.chm' files are made of compressed html.

So you'll have some poor noobie with Win7 on their brand new PC, who cant open half of their favourite programs help system, nor can they Google it for help!

So much for a backward compatable OS..

There is an existing option to uninstall IE8 in Windows 7, but this option only removes the actual iexplorer.exe program and some related files. The networking core still includes all the functionality required for running Help and windows update etc. I would assume that MS would simply ship with this option switched as it would be a bit late to re-engineer the OS to change the core

I'd better stop posting here as I could really rant about the EU.
    Be my guest!

I've been hearing about Microsoft and having a monopoly on IE being builtin for so long now it's pathetic! Netscape and others started all this some time back. It would seem the EU simply jumped in on the band wagon for IE and WMP!

I maybe wrong here but doesn't windows update use IE in some way ? Seems ludicrous to me but then again its the EU

It used to before the update app was updated in xp. But 7 does not rely on it, nor vista, nor an up to date xp anymore.
