This is one of my biggest peeves. Why is it assumed that open source is always good? To be perfectly honest, without MS creating a standard, the Desktop world would look like Linux, a decent kernel with no standard distributions or actual frontends.
This is one of the reasons Unix never caught on, there was no uniform distribution for business to interact with. You had Posix compliance, but that was all.
Windows created an actual standard that was uniform internationally. This, of course, requires an almost monopolistic standard, but at least we have some form of usability.
