The've even included the EEA which includes ICELAND -- why should we have to put up with this B/S we aren't even members of the EU.

As others have also drily remarked - how do you download anything even if its free if there's no browser included with your initial install.

Of course there's another little minor problem -- without a browser how do you activate your copy of windows or use any sort of Webmail service.

Well yet another case I suppose of Non technical management taking technical decisions. :mad:

I'll just D/L W7 retail from the US I suppose.

Removing IE itself does not remove the back-end dlls etc that service the WU and other items so it Should be possible to include some form of update link to IE or even alternate browsers

That's how I understand the removal option as it is at the moment and I assume how they will ship

The article goes into some explaination right off about this. read:

" Microsoft notes. "Computer manufacturers will be able to add any browser they want to their Windows 7 machines, including Internet Explorer, so European consumers who purchase new PCs will be able to access the Internet without any problem. Consumers will also be able to add any Web browser to their PCs, to supplement or replace the browsers preinstalled by their computer manufacturer."

What this is pointing out is that IE 8 will simply be a separate item manufacturers will have their own option to use or simply toss FireFox, Opera, Chrome, Netscape, Konqueror, or whatever they want on the systems they sell new. The home user that builds their own would download the browser ahead of time to back on removable even before upgrading to 7.

ok just a thougt. what about the software assurance program? If a person in europe buys a vista pc in the window period, then upgrades to windows 7 with the 'windows 7 E', does that leave them without a browser when the upgrade finishes?

Like I was saying before anyone with a system like one with Vista presently on would download the browser of choice including IE 8 before the upgrade took place.

Have a floppy? :D

Back up a copy of the browser until 7 is up and running on an extra drive or removable media to then install that once 7 is on. In the event that I decide to install XP or Vista at some point IE 8 for each is already backed up on a storage drive here being a time saver and one less item to download through the update process.
