I don't know why EU is doing this ... IT'S DISCRIMINATION!

Why they are not forcing Apple to remove Safari from Mac OS
and also remove firefox & konqueror from Linux distributions?

    Stupid question, or not?

Ahh... What I Hear... They are biased against MS!

While I think the EU is overly reactive to MS, the bottom line is that MS is a considered a monopoly and Linux and Apple are not. As a monopoly, MS is treated differently...and that is a good thing. Monopolies are not necessarily bad, but, due to their nature, can inflict a large amount of damage to an industry through their actions. Therefore they must operate under different rules.

So, bottom line, Apple and Linux are not treated the same as MS, and that is OK. This keeps competition alive and we consumers benefit.

But who made them a monopoly?
People who are using windows ... not some magic power!

So why I, as succesfull businessman with big portfolio cannot add MINE product (I mean IE) to MINE OS?

If someone doesnt like that it hane implemented IE then DONT USE IT ... Use some damn linux or mac ... noone is forcing people to use it.

And if you want to tell "They cannot use all apps in linux" so ... there are alternativis for almost all programs 4 linux or mac.

But people are using Windowses (Interesting word ) because they want & because win is the easiest and the best way to use PC. So people including EU should accept the fact that in OS that THEY WANT to use is IE as default browser.

Well first of all, don't worry about your English...It is far better than my Slovene.

Again, they are a monopoly by definition. MS has approximately 97% of the worldwide computer OS market. That alone makes them a monopoly. With that power comes consequences, and those include being treated differently.

People can't easily switch away from the PC to another OS. Due to issues of software lock-in, etc., they are forced to stick with Windows. In addition, the vast majority of users are not near as knowledgeable about computers as you and I. This makes the MS monopoly powerful, and governments don't usually like monopolies, they want competition. Competition makes for a better consumer experience most of the time.

The vast majority of users get their Windows via the oem market (i.e. pre-installed) so they will get a browser. The 5% of the retail folks are usually able to get their own browser install media. Overall, I don't think this will be a problem for most users.

Dobry den Ethan, In addition the Phree's excellent explanation the problem is not so much MS includes IE with Windows but that they do it in a way that makes it virtually impossible for the competition to replace IE with their product without diminishing the performance and have by adding non-standard components to their Webdesign suite created a world of incompatible websites for browsers other then IE.

These components are proprietary, so the competition cannot emulate them.

Every enterprise is there to make profits, but excessive profits due to a monopoly is extortion.

If you look at MS's income, you'll see that the OS makes up virtually all revenue of MS. Put against the investment in the development the revenue is in the 1000's of percent.

In other words they get seriously rich by overcharging you and me for a product we are forced to use by lack of serious competition. Competition which they killed over the years by abuse of their marketposition, adding code which made competitors software run worse then theirs.

Look at the Caldera case. How they pushed dr-dos out of the game by making Windows 3 run badly on any dos but ms-dos.

They are not nice guys, and as the saying goes he who lives by the sword dies by the sword.

    Bonne journée Petrossa,
Yes thats right ... and now when IE8 is supporting only standard HTML I see problems almost on every page.
When you told me it this way then I must agree!

Sorry, the borders have changed so much since I was in school. I'm actually pretty good about countries and languages, but I will admit that your part of the world has confused me a bit. I will, therefore, spend the weekend studying the current map and retracing the past 30 years of history of the people and language development.

I do know you border the Czech Republic, does that count for something?
