Seeking Alpha - Microsoft Moves to the Clouds

Tuesday's official launch of Microsoft Office 365 squarely positions the company as the latest major contender seeking to win a share of the rapidly growing Cloud Computing marketplace.
Although Microsoft has been saying that it is “All In” and funding a TV ad campaign, which has made the catchphrase “To the Cloud” popular, Microsoft 365 represents the company’s boldest offering to date. The company has been watching its Office suite suffer attacks from Google (GOOG) Apps for years. In fact, Google Apps are quickly becoming the basic productivity suite of choice for most new college graduates entering the workforce.

I... Do... Not... Want... To... Rent... Software!

20 years from now we'll all be paying $2 - $27 a month for every single piece of software we use PLUS metered bandwidth charges once all these cloud apps start completely overloading the net (similar to the way the overloaded cell "net" works today)

Enjoy your computing as you have it today... The future is going to be all about bleeding you dry with 1000 different micro charges a month.

ISTM that you could very well be correct if the Feds get a draconian grip on the Net. The more open it can remain the less chance of your scenario happening. Since I am not a proponent of Big Government with their draconian rules I am a little more optimistic then you are about this and what the future will bring.

Office 365 To Get Skype Integration

Office 365 To Get Skype Integration

Microsoft will tie Lync Online with the VoIP platform to make it easier for users of either service to communicate with each other.

    June 29, 2011 05:11 PM

Microsoft plans to couple voice and video conferencing tools in Office 365 with Skype once its acquisition of the VoIP platform is complete, according to a company official. Microsoft Office division president Kurt DelBene spoke of the plan Tuesday at the official Office 365 launch event in New York City. Office 365 is a rebranded, upgraded version of the company's Business Productivity Online Standard suite that adds Office Web Apps and other cloud services to the mix.

In speaking about Skype-Office 365 integration, DelBene confirmed much of what he told InformationWeek editors in an exclusive interview earlier this month--that Office 365's Lync communications tools and Skype will continue to exist as separate services, but they'll be closely tied.
"If you're a Lync user in your organization, in many cases you have people that are Skype users, for the consumer-oriented service of Skype that you'd want to connect to," said DelBene, in his interview with InformationWeek. "And you want to essentially have those Skype contacts be available from within Lync.
"For the Lync business in particular, it's a big opportunity to tap those large sets of consumers that use Skype," said DelBene.
